"Aizhai slope, mountains upon mountains, 13 turns — each turn, a gate to hell." This old folk rhyme was once a stark reflection of the hardships faced by the people of Xiangxi, Hunan Province, for whom crossing the mountains was a perilous struggle that kept them in poverty.⛰️
That changed in 2012 with the opening of the Aizhai Bridge. A striking red suspension bridge, it spans a gorge nearly a kilometer wide. Setting four world records, the bridge slashed travel time between the two banks from half an hour to just one minute—crossing at 80 km/h takes a mere 80 seconds. The drive from the provincial capital, Changsha, to Xiangxi was also cut from eight hours to four.🌁
The bridge has totally changed Xiangxi's tourism. Connecting Jiating Village and Xingfu Village, it links Miao ethnic customs, canyon landscapes, and the engineering marvel of the bridge itself into a single destination, which has now earned a national 5A tourist attraction rating.😄🥰😘
Xiangxi is a multi-ethnic region home to Han, Tujia, Miao, and Hui people. The bridge's operation has spurred the growth of over a hundred homestays and agritainment businesses, helping tens of thousands of locals increase their income right at their doorsteps. Young people who once left to work elsewhere are now “returning to the nest” to start businesses, turning the transportation dividend into a stream of vitality for local industries. Local treasures—rice, tea, kiwi juice, and cured meat—are now being transported from these deep mountains to markets all across the country. 🍵🍚🥝🥩
