Are all our materials cataloged to the same level? Do they all have summaries, accurate physical description, and subject headings? Or are there some that have less information (for various reasons)? #equityinlibraries #alaac2021

On most, if not all, subject headings pages on id.loc.gov, there is an option to suggest alternative terminology- see below. We might not all have the time or expertise to put a full proposal before LC, but we can advocate for change in small ways! #equityinlibraries

Are we using the most up-to-date standards appropriately? Do the people creating or updating those records have access to those standards, and tools to make sure the catalog is as useful as it can be? #equityinlibraries #alaac2021

Additionally, we should be proactive about updating and changing headings on the local level while we wait for LC to catch up. A robust local authority database would go a long way in decolonizing the catalog. #equityinlibraries #alaac2021

Bringing your tech services staff in on this work is crucial. Because we often don't work public facing jobs, we don't always know how users are searching for, asking about, or using our collections, and this informs how we describe resources. #alaac2021 #equityinlibraries

The Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee (sites.google.com/view/catalo…) published their final code of ethics in Jan 2021. This document is intended for use as a tool to help guide catalogers and metadata workers in the creation of ethical metadata. #equityinlibraries #alaac2021

Additionally, the use of robust analytics is quite helpful here - how are your users searching the catalog? Are those keywords the same as your indexed headings? If not, what's different? Can you include alternatives to LCSH, such as Homosaurus? #equityinlibraries #alaac2021

A great first step would be to look at the Change the Subject documentary! Check out the website - bit.ly/3w0MajO. Another is look at how historically excluded communities define or refer to themselves and see if it matches the catalog. #equityinlibraries #alaac2021

Additionally, many ebook platforms offer font modification (both size and dyslexic friendly font), in-text access to dictionaries or other reference sources to help with understanding. #equityinlibraries #alaac2021

Ebooks can be accessed on a variety of platforms (computers, cellular devices, tablets) and can help get materials in the hands of those students who cannot physically come to the library. #equityinlibraries #alaac21
To disrupt inequity in Denver Public School libraries, we built a Selection Audit tool, used to ensure the books we buy are culturally responsive and speak to the lived experiences of our students. Here is a link to our doc: bit.ly/DPSSelectionAudit #equityinlibraries #alaac21

Agreed! I think there are also certain types of books we shy away from depending on our student body/community, and equity in collections should also consider gender identity, sexuality and the stories of marginalized groups #equityinlibraries #alaac21

Yes, we are in discussion with the vendors who supply MARC records to our vendors. 😄 Plus university and library partners; we are casting a wide net right now #equityinlibraries #alaac21
We are fortunate to have a school board policy that governs collection development but we can also provide guidance and reference materials that are valuable on the ground for our schools #equityinlibraries #alaac21
In a district like ours where not all school libraries are staffed, we also think ebooks can bridge the gap in resource access, although they are no replacement for a licensed school librarian! #equityinlibraries #alaac21
