#TestItTuesday, Every Check Still Counts Many UK households continue to face real financial pressure. Energy costs remain elevated by historic standards, disposable income is stretched, and difficult choices are being made week by week. That reality is understood. However, one area where cutting back carries genuine risk is gas appliance safety. #TestItTuesday Make sure you have a working Carbon Monoxide alarm in your home. If you do not, please buy one today. Carbon monoxide is invisible, odourless and deadly. Faulty or poorly maintained gas appliances remain one of the most common sources of accidental CO exposure in the UK, particularly during winter when homes are sealed and heating systems run for longer periods. The Reality Behind the Numbers Recent UK surveys conducted by gas safety bodies and major energy suppliers continue to show worrying patterns: • Around one third of households now service their boiler less frequently than once a year, commonly every two years or longer • Between 5 and 10 percent of households report never servicing their boiler at all • Fewer than one quarter of households consistently arrange an annual boiler service • Roughly one in three people say they have skipped or delayed gas safety checks due to cost pressures These are not abstract statistics. They reflect real homes, real families and real risk. A Difficult Truth Skipping servicing may feel like a saving, but it is often a false economy. Poorly maintained appliances are more likely to fail, less efficient, and more dangerous. Carbon monoxide incidents do not announce themselves loudly. They creep in quietly, often mistaken for flu, fatigue or stress. No one is suggesting households should be careless with money. But basic safety must remain non-negotiable. What Still Matters in 2026 • Test your Carbon Monoxide alarm monthly • Ensure alarms are fitted near fuel burning appliances and sleeping areas • Have gas appliances checked by a qualified professional whenever possible • Know the symptoms of CO exposure, headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion This is not about blame or alarmism. It is about realism, responsibility and prevention at a time when many homes are under strain. Please take a moment this #TestItTuesday. Every check still counts. #TestItTuesday #CarbonMonoxide #GasSafety #HomeSafety #WinterSafety #COAlarms #CostOfLiving #EveryCheckCounts

Checking, Every Check Counts As we begin 2026, the UK is experiencing a sustained cold spell. Many households are spending long periods indoors with doors and windows firmly closed and heating systems running continuously. In these conditions, the importance of having a working Carbon Monoxide alarm cannot be overstated. Carbon monoxide is a silent, colourless and odourless gas. It can build up quickly when fuel burning appliances are faulty, poorly ventilated or not properly maintained. Winter significantly increases risk due to higher heating use and reduced airflow. Week after week, I ask people to #TestItTuesday and check that they have working Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms in their homes. Please take this seriously. Let us make 2026 a year where preventable carbon monoxide harm is reduced as far as possible. #TestItTuesday Make sure you have a working Carbon Monoxide alarm today. If you do not, buy one now. What You Should Do Install Carbon Monoxide Alarms Fit CO alarms in every room with a fuel burning appliance and near sleeping areas. They are inexpensive, simple to install and can save lives. Maintain Heating and Appliances Have boilers, heaters, chimneys and flues inspected and serviced annually by a qualified professional. Alarms are essential, but they do not replace proper maintenance. Know the Warning Signs Carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms are often mistaken for flu or fatigue. Watch for headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion and breathlessness. If you suspect CO exposure, ventilate immediately, turn off appliances if safe to do so and seek urgent medical help. Current UK Context Each year, around 4,000 people attend Accident and Emergency departments in the UK due to carbon monoxide exposure or suspected poisoning. In England, there are hundreds of hospital admissions annually, and dozens of accidental deaths continue to occur despite being largely preventable. In London alone, gas emergency services attended 8,665 carbon monoxide related incidents in 2023/24, representing a 37 percent increase on the previous year. These figures rise during colder periods when heating use increases and ventilation decreases. This is not about fear. It is about awareness, responsibility and simple preventative action. A monthly alarm test and annual appliance service can be the difference between a safe winter and a tragedy. Please take a moment this #TestItTuesday.
