Checking, Every Check Counts
As we begin 2026, the UK is experiencing a sustained cold spell. Many households are spending long periods indoors with doors and windows firmly closed and heating systems running continuously. In these conditions, the importance of having a working Carbon Monoxide alarm cannot be overstated.
Carbon monoxide is a silent, colourless and odourless gas. It can build up quickly when fuel burning appliances are faulty, poorly ventilated or not properly maintained. Winter significantly increases risk due to higher heating use and reduced airflow.
Week after week, I ask people to
#TestItTuesday and check that they have working Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms in their homes. Please take this seriously. Let us make 2026 a year where preventable carbon monoxide harm is reduced as far as possible.

Make sure you have a working Carbon Monoxide alarm today. If you do not, buy one now.
What You Should Do
Install Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Fit CO alarms in every room with a fuel burning appliance and near sleeping areas. They are inexpensive, simple to install and can save lives.
Maintain Heating and Appliances
Have boilers, heaters, chimneys and flues inspected and serviced annually by a qualified professional. Alarms are essential, but they do not replace proper maintenance.
Know the Warning Signs
Carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms are often mistaken for flu or fatigue. Watch for headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion and breathlessness. If you suspect CO exposure, ventilate immediately, turn off appliances if safe to do so and seek urgent medical help.
Current UK Context
Each year, around 4,000 people attend Accident and Emergency departments in the UK due to carbon monoxide exposure or suspected poisoning.
In England, there are hundreds of hospital admissions annually, and dozens of accidental deaths continue to occur despite being largely preventable.
In London alone, gas emergency services attended 8,665 carbon monoxide related incidents in 2023/24, representing a 37 percent increase on the previous year.
These figures rise during colder periods when heating use increases and ventilation decreases.
This is not about fear. It is about awareness, responsibility and simple preventative action. A monthly alarm test and annual appliance service can be the difference between a safe winter and a tragedy.
