Before you panic or celebrate, here's what this post leaves out:
Trump called NATO a "paper tiger" and said he's "beyond reconsideration" about leaving. That part is real — he told The Telegraph directly.
BUT: In 2023, Congress passed a law that PREVENTS the president from withdrawing from NATO without Senate consent or an act of Congress. Trump cannot unilaterally leave.
His reasoning: NATO allies refused to join the Iran war. What he doesn't mention — NATO is a DEFENSIVE alliance (Article 5). Iran was an offensive US operation. Allies aren't required to join offensive wars.
Also in the same interview, Trump mocked Britain's navy: "You don't even have a navy. Your aircraft carriers didn't work." This is diplomatic language that burns bridges, not builds them.
The real question isn't whether Trump WANTS to leave NATO. It's whether Congress will let him.
