Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has received major relief from the Karnataka High Court, which on Saturday quashed the FIR filed against him in the Kantara mockery controversy. The case stemmed from an incident at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of Goa, where Ranveer’s recreation of an iconic scene from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara sparked outrage, with many accusing him of disrespecting the film’s deeply rooted religious and cultural sentiments. The High Court, while dismissing the FIR, acknowledged that the actor’s actions had indeed hurt public sentiments and directed him to visit the Chamundeshwari Temple in Mysuru within four weeks as part of the resolution. Ranveer, who was absent from the courtroom citing security concerns amid the massive success of his latest release Dhurandhar 2, had his lawyer Sajan Poovayya submit an unconditional apology affidavit on his behalf. The court has not set a specific date for the temple visit yet. The verdict draws a close to a controversy that sparked a wider debate around the boundaries of artistic expression and respect for religious sentiments in India.
