Agatha built her own garden inside Kirikiri. Spinach, ugwu, ginger, waterleaf, that is not a small thing, that is reformation in action. Through the Farming Justice Project, Hope Behind Bars Africa delivered Mind Reformation Training at the Kirikiri Female Custodial Centre, covering restorative justice, behavioral change, and horticultural therapy. The session led by two of experts, covered restorative justice, behavioral change, and horticultural therapy. The room was full of honest reflection and renewed vision from justice-impacted individuals who are already taking what they have learned home, growing food, and are daring to picture life beyond the gate. The Farming Justice Project is delivered in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (ROLAC), funded by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA. As part of our commitment to strengthening institutional partnerships, which remain central to the long-term success of the Farming Justice Project, this week, Hope Behind Bars Africa met with Nigerian Correctional Service leadership at Zone A Headquarters, headed by ACG Olatusun Dele Ajibogun, FCSS, fsi, to review progress and explore the expansion of structured rehabilitation programming. Sustainable impact happens when skill-building and behavioral development are embedded into facility operations, turning reformation and reintegration from theory into practice. Through the Farming Justice Project, practical skills and behavioral development are advanced in partnership with correctional authorities, creating credible pathways for reformation and reintegration. Rehabilitation fails when justice-impacted individuals leave custody without skills. At Edo (Oko) Correctional Centre, the Farming Justice Project is changing that. Our team at Hope Behind Bars Africa began teaching people behind bars, climate-smart farming, horticultural therapy behavioural skills , turning daily routines into practical growth. What began with soil and seeds has grown into structured learning, responsibility, and habits that prepare over 100 beneficiaries for life beyond incarceration. This project goes beyond farming: it strengthens reintegration pathways while embedding rehabilitation at the centre of the correctional system. For Sani, who at age 23 was convicted for the theft of electrical cables & sentenced to 1year imprisonment or payment of N200,000, who opted to serve his sentence, incarceration is not the end of life for him. Through the Farming Justice Project, several other inmates like Sani engaged in an Interactive Mind-Reformation workshop at the Kuje Custodial Centre and the Dukpa farm Correctional Centre. 200 justice-impacted individuals were in these holistic sessions, which featured horticultural therapy, reflective exercises, breakout/group conversations, financial literacy, and Q&A sessions, and concluded with a shared meal. During the event, the participants shared their experiences and dreams with us, some of which are shared in this video. The Farming Justice Project is a systemic intervention challenging the cycle of exclusion and unemployment that often meets justice-impacted individuals, in correctional centers. By integrating climate-friendly food production into correctional education, this initiative strengthens Nigeria’s justice reform efforts, linking rehabilitation, food security, and sustainable livelihoods. We have started seeing the fruits of the Farming Justice Project! This farming season marks a transformative milestone, as some of the participants have successfully harvested their first fluted pumpkin (Ugu) and okra. This goes beyond the physical harvest. It is seen in the way people behind bars interact with us during our training sessions, with joy and eagerness to learn. It is seen in the pride in their eyes when they see the fruits of their labour. It is seen in the hope we hear in their voice, when they talk about the future and what it holds for them. Over the past few months, more than 600 incarcerated individuals have gained hands-on experience in organic and climate-smart agriculture, acquiring skills that can sustain them and their communities beyond incarceration. The Farming Justice Project goes beyond agriculture; it is a systemic intervention challenging the cycle of exclusion and unemployment that often meets justice-impacted individuals, leaving correctional centers. By integrating climate-friendly agriculture into correctional education, this initiative strengthens Nigeria’s justice reform efforts, linking rehabilitation, food security, and sustainable livelihood. The Farming Justice Project was officially flagged off at the Kuje Medium Custodial Centre, marking a new chapter in how rehabilitation is approached within Nigeria’s correctional system. Through this project, people behind bars are gaining hands-on agricultural training, learning to rear fish, okra, tomatoes, fluted pumpkin(Ugu). This project is designed to rehabilitate justice-impacted individuals within custodial centres starting with Abuja, Edo, and Lagos, equipping them with practical skills that can support self-reliance and life after release. Beyond skill-building, the project aims to challenge the system, showing that correctional centres can be spaces of growth, empowerment, and sustainable transformation. By giving people behind bars the tools and knowledge to contribute to food production and build livelihoods, we reduce reoffending, restore dignity, and create lasting, positive change in both their lives and the broader correctional system. At the Dukpa Correctional Farm Centre, people behind bars are gaining skills that can help them reintegrate into society. Through the Farming Justice Project, we introduced them to organic and climate-friendly farming practices. This training was not just theory. After the session, we moved to the farm and applied what they had learned, gaining practical experience. For many of them, this is more than a training. It is a step toward self-reliance and reformation. By learning how to grow food sustainably, they are building practical skills that will serve them long after their time behind bars.
