ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
23 MAY 2026 EMERGENCY WATER RATIONING IMPLEMENTED FOR AREAS SUPPLIED BY THE SOUTHERN AQUEDUCT The eThekwini Municipality wishes to inform residents and businesses supplied by the Southern Aqueduct system that water rationing will be implemented from midday today, 23 May. This is necessary because the system is currently unable to operate at full capacity following the completion of the planned Southern Aqueduct shutdown and tie-in works. Although the tie-in works were completed successfully on Friday, 22 May, and the new steel pipeline was commissioned as planned, one section of the existing Prestressed Concrete Pipe (PCP) in Northbourne Road, Westville, remains closed. This section is located directly in the path of the new 1600mm steel pipeline currently being installed by the contractor as part of the ongoing Southern Aqueduct upgrade project. The contractor is carefully working through this constraint to ensure the installation is completed safely and correctly. At present, the system can only supply between 175 and 180 megalitres of water per day, instead of the required 231 megalitres per day needed to fully replenish the system. This has resulted in a current shortfall of approximately 50 megalitres per day, making water rationing necessary while the works continue. Residents and businesses in affected areas may continue to experience low water pressure, intermittent supply, or temporary outages during this period. To restore full system operations, the contractor will continue with installation works and replace four lengths of the existing PCP pipeline. Once completed, this will allow the Southern Aqueduct to return to normal operating flows. Affected areas include: *N-Pumpstation- Klaarwater, Phumphele, St Wendolins, part of Nsizwakazi, Savannah Park Phase 1&2 and Wiltshire Factories. *Washington Heights (Reservoir P) : Klaarwater, Nsizwaqkazi, Regency Park, Latana, Hlanganisa, Gwala Road Nsizwakazi and Sarjoo Road. *Intake Reservoir (Reservoir Q)- Demat, Progress Road, Mawelewele Area, Intake Road, Luganda, Part of Nagina Township, Khoseleni Area, Sthundu Hills, Dambuza, Part of Bell Tower Road, Part of Grasmere Road and Mpongo Road. *NORTHDENE 1&2 : Farningham Ridge, Hillary, Malvern, Mount Vernon, Queensburgh, Queensmead, Industrial and Shallcross. *Firwood Reservoir: Farningham Ridge, Malvern, Moseley Park, Mount Vernon, Nirvana Hills, Northdene and Queensburgh. *Ridley Park Reservoir : Coedmore, Farningham Ridge, Hillary, Malvern, Memorial Park, Mount Vernon, Queensburgh, Umbilo, Umhlathuzana and Umkhumbaan. *Chatworth 4 Reservoir: Arena Park, Bulbul, Chartsworth Town Centre, Crossmoor, Enhlanzeni, Ezinyathini, Klaarwater, Kwamgaga, Montford, Moorton, Phumphele, Risecliff, Shallcross, Silverglen, Welbedagt East, Welbedagt West, Westcliff and Woodhurst. *Shallcross Reservoir: Buffels Bosch, Burlington Heights, Moseley Park and Queensburgh. *Savannah Park and Shallcross. Brighton & Hove Albion will pay tribute to a police officer who died in a crash while responding to an emergency call. Kent Police officer Bradley Corke, 27, died on 21 March after the crash in Farningham, near Swanley, on 19 March. A fellow officer, who was in the same vehicle, remains in a critical condition. Corke, from Hastings, East Sussex, was an avid Seagulls supporter and a season-ticket holder. Paul Barber, chief executive of the football club, said: "It is with genuine sadness we pay tribute in today's programme to PC Bradley Corke, a true Brighton & Hove Albion supporter who was killed in the line of duty." Barber added: "Many of you will be aware and will have read about this tragedy; it has been heartbreaking for his family and friends.” "On behalf of all of us at Albion, I would like to pass on our deepest condolences.” "Our thoughts are very much with Bradley's loved ones at what is an incredibly difficult time." A tribute will be held during Albion's home match against Chelsea at 20:00 BST on Tuesday. 'My favourite memories' Corke's brother, Nathan, described him as the "kindest soul" and "best big brother anyone could ask for". He added that they had supported Albion at both home and away matches. "Some of my favourite memories with Bradley were those trips – like Roberto De Zerbi's first game in charge, the incredible 3–3 draw away at Liverpool and unforgettable European nights at Ajax and Roma," he said. "These memories will stay with me forever." Nathan added that one of his brother's favourite moments was Alexis Mac Allister's last-minute penalty against Manchester United. "It was a moment we shared that sums up everything we loved about football and being together," he said. "I love you, Brad, and I will always continue to make you proud." The crash involved a marked Ford Focus police car and a VW Scirocco and happened on the westbound A20 London Road at the junction with Button Street in Farningham, Kent Police said. A week ago today, Kent Police Constable Bradley Corke and his partner were responding to an emergency incident near the town of Farningham in Kent, England. As they approached a junction in the road, they were involved in a collision with another vehicle. Both PC Corke, his partner and the driver of the other vehicle were all rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Tragically, Bradley passed away two days later. The young constable gave his life trying to save the lives of members of the public who were in danger. PC Bradley Corke joined Kent Police in 2022 and spent his entire police career based in Tonbridge, serving towns across West Kent. Bradley’s family remembered him as a true gentleman, and one of the finest young men to have ever walked this Earth. His dedication to helping others truly defined who he was. Brad was just 27-years old. Credit: Jonny Castro Art
