Today in Rock History December 20, 1965 The Beach Boys released “Barbara Ann” from their tenth studio album, Beach Boys’ Party!. The song, written by Fred Fassert of doo-wop group The Regents, was originally recorded by them in 1961.

Ik ben even op zoek gegaan naar de cijfers. Onder voorbehoud van juistheid (kloppen deze, @AnnickDeRidder ?) Globaal wordt 1 op 5 wagens 'afgekeurd'. Het lijkt dus een 'nuttige keuring'. Het wordt iets inzichtelijker als je per criterium gaat inzoomen. Op één staan de lichten met 7.3%. ICE vs BEV : we gaan dus van gloeilampen naar software gestuurde LED-verlichting. Als we willen, kunnen we inbouwen in een wagen dat als een verlichting langer dan 2 weken niet werkt, de wagen niet kan starten. Voor verlichting is de reden om een autokeuring te organiseren voor BEV gewoon nul. Afstelling van lichten, idem. Software gestuurd. 2.6% is banden. Te weinig profiel en te weinig bandendruk. Bandendruk is simpel : software matig te sturen zoals verlichting. Geen keuring die hier zinvol is. Te weinig profiel is een issue. Alleen bestaan hier geen deftige cijfers over. Uit ervaring wordt er nauwelijks gemeten en wordt er op zicht beslist. Hoeveel dit van die 2.6% is onduidelijk. Hoe objectief dat is, nog minder. Maar dit hele circus gaande houden voor 1 wagen, max 2 op 100, lijkt me goede drogreden om inkomen te verzamelen voor SBAT. 1.9% is identificatie. Whatever that means, dat is dus noch een milieu issue, noch een veiligheidsissue. Geen reden om daarvoor een keuring te organiseren. 1.4% is remmen. U weet wel, die dingen met remblokjes en co. BEV beschikt over regeneratief remmen en slijtage op remmen is dus een non-issue. Remblokjes hebben nauwelijks slijtage. 0,4% is roettest. Goed, ICE en roet kan ik aannemen, hoewel dit een ronduit belachelijk laag cijfer is. Voor BEV telt het niet. Opnieuw : BEV stelt de politiek & onze Vlaamse regering voor een 'maintenant ou jamais' moment. Laten we de keuring koehandel opdoeken voor BEV. Eventuele grote zorgen kunnen software matig opgelost worden. Autokeuring is een relikwie uit ons verleden. Met BEV en software is dit een zinloos circus dat enkel geldklopperij bij velen voor enkelingen. Als we dit nu afschaffen, fassert dit zonder te veel problemen uit en kraait er geen haan naar.

Fluffing the Covers: Barbara-Ann Sometimes, being a musical genius can be tough. You know you are making brilliant music, but are you leaving the audience behind? Do you need for them to catch up? This was certainly the case for Brian Wilson in 1965. The latest Beach Boys single, The Little Girl I Once Knew, was beloved by folks like John Lennon, but DJs didn't know what to make of a song with tempo shifts, sudden pauses and periods of silence, and audiences in 1965 weren't ready for something this experimental. So the song flopped. Looking for a quick hit and something to release in time for Christmas, the Beach Boys got together with their buddy Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean (who appears uncredited because of record label issues) and cut a quick album of covers called Beach Boys' Party! And guess what? This quickie, purely commercial enterprise was a massive hit, including its first single, Barbara Ann. The thing is, Capitol released the song without the band's knowledge and approval, and it wasn't even written by Brian Wilson or any other band member. Barbara Ann began life as a doo-wop song called Barbara-Anne written by Fred Fassert in 1958 and recorded by the Regents. However, this original version sat on the shelf for 3 years, not getting released until 1961. Just like Green Onions, this is another song that my little ears first heard when I was 9 and watching American Graffiti (yes, it is one of my favorite films of all time). The Regents had a hit with the song, but this and the follow-up Runaround were their only trips to the Top 40. Despite not agreeing to release their cover of Barbara Ann as a single, the decision by Capitol gave the Beach Boys a massive international hit. And it paved the way for commercial success for the band's next album Pet Sounds, which would also be beloved by the critics. Oddly, the first single from Pet Sounds would also be a cover, this time of the traditional folk song Sloop John B.
