As I reflect on the ongoing tariff situation, something stands out—the federal and provincial Liberal and NDP governments have done everyday, hardworking people in BC absolutely no favours. For years, they’ve taken every opportunity to insult Trump and the Republican Party, prioritizing politics and ideological attacks over the practical diplomacy that we expect from our government leaders.
David Eby’s latest move—targeting red states with trade restrictions and banning bourbon—is pouring jet fuel on the fire. It’s a reckless, knee-jerk reaction that does nothing meaningful to help struggling British Columbians who I hear from everyday — it won’t help a single BC family with the cost of gas, groceries, or heating.
Instead of standing up for our province’s economy, Eby’s NDP is making things worse by escalating tensions… Moreover, Eby has cancelled programs that would actually help working people in BC — like the $1,000 for groceries which he promised, and clearly lied about, in the 2024 BC election.
Thankfully, the political landscape in British Columbia and Canada is shifting. John Rustad & our Conservative Party of BC are showing we’re ready to lead by we’re putting forward concrete solutions, and Pierre Poilievre’s federal Conservatives are poised to take over from Canada’s lightweight, dysfunctional federal Liberals.
Instead of playing political games and making things more difficult for everyday, hardworking people, Conservatives of all stripes will take the opportunity to build a stronger economic relationship—one that benefits both sides. We need to fight to stop the trade war and move with real solutions — like the Conservative Party of BC’s 10-point plan.
