On this day in 1991, Disney's Port Orleans Resort French Quarter, a re-creation of the streets and rowhouses of New Orleans' French Quarter, opened at Walt Disney World.  Located in the Downtown Disney area, the resort had 432 guest rooms in 3 buildings and would increase to 1,008 when construction on the remaining 4 buildings is completed. Also opening is the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory food court, Jackson Square Gifts and Desires shop, and Bonfamille's Cafe restaurant.

The Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter is themed as a working warehouse for storing oversized Mardi Gras parade floats. Giant parade heads (kings, jesters, and wild faces), colorful floats, beads dripping from the ceiling, and even umbrellas representing New Orleans’ Second Line parades fill the space (around 2015-2016 the space got a major refurbishment that simplified the theming, but many of the original pieces still remain). Some of the props are modeled directly after real Mardi Gras elements from the city…it was equal parts festive and creepy, like eating under the watchful eyes of enormous parade characters. Virtually all the giant parade heads, jesters, floats, masks, and oversized decorations were supplied (or directly created) by Blaine Kern Studios, the legendary New Orleans company that has built the majority of actual Mardi Gras floats and props since the 1940s. Some pieces were even purchased straight from real Mardi Gras warehouses in the city, making the “storage warehouse” theming feel eerily genuine rather than just Disney-fied. The colorful jester figures scattered throughout the food court (and out by the Doubloon Lagoon pool) were modeled directly after a specific statue that still stands next to the Canal Street / Algiers Ferry terminal in New Orleans. Sassagoula Floatworks is a hidden QSR gem. The only thing they need to bring back is the beignet burger.

The smothered beef and gravy at Sassagoula Floatworks is very yummy! The gravy is so rich and flavorful. Not pictured- the beignets with chocolate dipping sauce that we also shamelessly devoured. 😋
