Veeck as in Butte. Over the last century-plus, no family has had more of a through-line influence on baseball than the Veecks, starting with Bill Senior, who joined the Cubs WAAAAY back in 1917. Bill Junior made his name as owner of the old Milwaukee Brewers, the Browns, the Indians, and the White Sox, introducing innovations still in use many decades on. Mike’s been leading minor league clubs for more than 35 years, and Night Train is excelling as the fourth generation, currently serving as the GM of the Joliet Slammers. Bill Veeck, Jr. is known for introducing countless innovations to the game of baseball. Veeck’s touch is still omnipresent today, from every big league yard down to the lowest levels of pro ball, to college ball, and beyond. And, while some of his shenanigans wouldn’t go over well today—like sending 3’7” Eddie Gaedel to the plate wearing 1/8 on his back, just six weeks after Bill took over the Browns on this date in 1951—his colorblind approach to scouting enabled him to integrate his ballclubs years before other organizations, some of which were overly conservative, some of which were overtly racist.
