The hidden meaning behind PayPal’s overlapping "P" monogram.
In 2014, Yves Béhar and his firm, Fuseproject, led a significant brand evolution for PayPal, marking its first major refresh since 2007. Moving away from the static, outlined typography of the past, Béhar introduced a design focused on "connection" and "forwardness" to better suit a mobile-first world. The centrepiece of this identity was the iconic double "P" monogram, featuring overlapping, translucent letters that create a vibrant, darker blue hue where they meet. This overlap symbolised the link between people and the speed of digital transactions. Accompanied by a simplified, italicised wordmark in a custom Futura-style typeface, the redesign provided a modern, energetic aesthetic. Béhar’s work successfully transitioned the company’s image from a simple web utility into a dynamic, global financial leader.
