From diesel-powered fleets to mining machinery, carbon emissions remain one of the biggest operational and environmental challenges for businesses across Africa. South African start-up, Fleetainable, founded by 2024 #TEFAlumni Kamogelo Motshidi, is changing that narrative through innovative carbon-intelligence technology that helps companies measure, manage, and reduce their emissions in real time. By combining software intelligence with IoT technology, Fleetainable is helping industries like logistics, mining, and power generation improve ESG compliance, cut operational costs, and drive more sustainable business practices. Supported by the Tony Elumelu Foundation and the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP), Kamogelo’s journey is a testament to how African entrepreneurs are building scalable solutions to tackle global challenges. #EmpoweredByTEF #TEF2026 #TEFImpact

ICCDI, alongside other technical partners, participated in the launch of the Global Clean-Tech Innovation Program (GCIP) SME Acceleration Fund – Cycle 2, organised by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Abuja. The meeting provided valuable insights into Nigeria’s innovation and energy ecosystem, highlighting the role of the GCIP platform in supporting enterprises focused on energy access, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability. Discussions emphasized the importance of scaling innovative solutions and strengthening institutional collaboration with government agencies and funding partners. In his opening remarks, the CEO of REA, Dr. Abba Aliyu, reflected on the achievements recorded during GCIP Cycle One and expressed confidence that Cycle Two would build on those successes while addressing previous implementation challenges. He reiterated that the programme is designed to leverage innovation and entrepreneurship to tackle Nigeria’s electricity access challenges and stressed the importance of strategic alignment with the initiative for sustained engagement. Further discussions showcased notable successes from the first cycle, including the growth of recycling enterprises that have progressed to establishing facilities and securing partnerships with larger organizations. Participants also commended both local and international partners for their support and advocated for the institutionalisation of GCIP by the Ministry, alongside sustained international funding and governance oversight as the programme expands. The engagement concluded with a shared recognition of the need for continuous partner collaboration to address implementation gaps and maximise the impact and sustainability of GCIP Cycle Two.

Innovation will play a defining role in how we solve Nigeria’s energy challenges and more importantly, how we build a sustainable, low carbon future. I had the pleasure of attending the ideation and project launch announcement of the Global Clean-tech Innovation Programme (GCIP) in Nigeria, where the Rural Electrification Agency is proud to serve as a co-executing partner alongside the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology and Co-Creation Hub. GCIP is a critical platform, designed to support clean-tech entrepreneurs, accelerate innovation, and connect promising solutions to private sector investment. It is also a programme that speaks directly to inclusion, creating opportunities for women and youth while strengthening Nigeria’s broader innovation ecosystem. At REA, our role goes beyond participation. We have been tasked with designing and operationalising the financial mechanisms that will support SMEs with the most impactful clean energy solutions. I am particularly pleased that we are marking the successful conclusion of Cycle 1, while officially commencing Cycle 2 building on the momentum already created. I must also take a moment to commend the REF team for their dedication and execution, and to recognise the leadership of Hon. Doris Uboh, whose commitment continues to drive this work forward. Her approach reflects both discipline and vision, qualities that are essential for programmes of this scale. What this initiative represents is a clear shift toward building not just projects, but ecosystems where innovation, financing, and entrepreneurship come together to deliver real impact. The work continues. #GCIP #CleanTech #Innovation #EnergyAccess #Entrepreneurship #CleanEnergyNigeria #YouthEmpowerment #WomenInEnergy #PoweringNigeria #abbaaliyu
