Looking at second gens The year 1998 is the split. Early 98 keeps the 12 valve. Late 98.5 moves to the 24 valve with a new injection pump. Why 1998 matters for a 12 valve. It is the only year you can get a quad cab with rear doors that actually open. From 94 to 97 the extended cab has no rear doors. Those small rear hinged doors work. You can open them and still walk around the truck. Bigger rear hinged doors on newer trucks make simple stuff, like loading groceries a chore. The small Dodge doors just get it done. So if you want a 12 valve with real back seat access, start with 1998. If you want the 24 valve, look at 98.5 and newer. 30 MPG out of a dually?? Sounds crazy but hear us out. A magazine actually pulled this off years ago with a fuel economy test on a dually. Yeah they taped up the grill, killed the AC, taped the wheels and basically did everything they could, to cheat the air but they got there. Then one of our guys ran a similar test with a 12 valve and hit 30 MPG too. At that point it stops being a fluke and starts being proof, that these old Cummins platforms are seriously underrated for efficiency. Oh and the truck he was running? Bought it used and it already had some of our parts on it. Three piece manifold, boots, the whole deal. Whoever owned it before had good taste.
