SUMMONED TO THE BIG HOUSE: The Swapo Party has summoned the entire board of Gendev Fishing Group (Pty) Ltd and the company’s finance executive to an urgent meeting at State House, scheduled for tomorrow, as pressure mounts over a series of labour disputes, financial troubles and growing scrutiny surrounding the fishing company. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will form part of the meeting.
Gendev is 96.5% owned by Swapo commercial enterprise Guinas Investments.
Swapo insiders confirmed that Swapo secretary general Sophia Shaningwa has instructed Gendev board chairperson Pau Iilonga to ensure that the entire board and finance executive attend the meeting.
Those invited are directors Paulina Haindongo, Leonie Edwards, Robert Shimwooshili, Sandro de Goveia, Josef Andreas, George Pieters, Josef Katukula, Gideon Hamukwaya and Nico Kaiyamo, as well as finance executive Ruby Rees.
The summons comes against the backdrop of escalating problems linked to Gendev. In February this year, Namibian Sun reported that employees of Hodago Fishing — a company partly owned by Gendev - had allegedly gone unpaid since November 2025.
In March, further media reports indicated that Gendev allegedly sent workers home without pay after informing them that there was no money available to settle salaries.
The company was simultaneously considering retrenching nearly 500 workers because of operational constraints and limited fishing quotas, reports indicated.
