This article is being published during the Chinese New Year. Wishing everyone a happy Chinese New Year! May the new year bring you good fortune, peace, and joy.😊 “Harmonic Core” you’re chasing? It’s actually a 700-year-old flex! Dear Young Masters, greetings you all here! I’m sure you’ve already seen the whales or lucky devils pull their first and second Harmonic Core feeling a bit envious? Without a doubt, it is the most soul-stirring treasure in this game. In order to earn the chance to draw it, people run around to complete quests, take on challenges, and do combats… all to accumulate Lingering Melody to draw a Harmonic Core. Like everything else in WWM, the Harmonic Core was based on real cultural relic, which is called the Ghostwork Ball (鬼工球). You’re probably not surprised by that at all. But here’s a little-known fact: buying a Ghostwork Ball in the real world today actually costs less than pulling an Harmonic Core in WWM. Today, we’re going to unveil the story behind the Harmonic Core. What it’s based on is the relic that even many Chinese people have never heard of! 📷Picture 1:A Harmonic Core and the ivory Ghostwork Ball from the author's collection (Note: this item is made from mammoth ivory excavated from permafrost dating back to the Ice Age; no living wild animals were harmed.) John Barrow, a member of the British embassy that visited China in 1793, wrote down the following about ivory carving (Ghostwork Balls) in his book Travels in China: “Of all the ingenious arts in which the Chinese excel, that of carving ivory is perhaps carried to the highest perfection. In this they are confessedly unrivalled… A sphere is carved from a single piece of ivory, containing within a less than half-inch diameter aperture, nine to fifteen separate concentric spheres, one within another, each of which revolves freely.” I know everyone understands what a “ball” is—but what does “Ghostwork” mean? In Chinese, there is an ancient idiom, 鬼斧神工 (gui fu shen gong), used to describe creations of extraordinary subtlety and perfection, as if they could only be accomplished by gods or spirits. First appearing in Zhuangzi, it is often used to praise the exquisite craftsmanship of sculpture and other arts: "supernaturally fine craft, the work of the gods or ghosts—uncanny and superlative." The traditional craft of carving Ghostwork Balls was pioneered by artisans during the Song Dynasty and flourished throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the Song period, craftsmen were only able to produce balls with a small number of nested layers, similar to the example above, which is also an important source of inspiration and historical basis for the Harmonic Core in WWM. At present, records of Song-dynasty Ghostwork Balls (ivory nested balls) are found primarily in Gegu Yaolun (Essential Criteria of Antiquities), written in the early Ming dynasty by Cao Zhao, which is the earliest extant document known to mention Ghostwork Balls: [There is] a round ball of ivory with a hole running straight through the center, having several internal layers [turned on a lathe], all of which could revolve. It is called a 'devil's work sphere' (kuei-kung ch'iu). Some say they were made in the Inner Court [Workshops] of Emperor Gaozong [of the Southern Song]. By combining with the accounts of Wensi Academy— a royal institution under the Shaofu Jian(the Directorate of Imperial Manufactories), from the book Collected Drafts of the Song Administrative Statutes, we can trace evidence that these refined carving and craftsmanship originated from Song Dynasty court artisans.. The decorative patterns on nested balls generally consist of several categories of motifs: auspicious beasts (such as loongs and phoenixes), immortals and legendary figures, various floral designs, and palatial towers or pavilions. These motifs are largely drawn from traditional Chinese cultural symbols of good fortune and organically combined to symbolize prosperity, harmony, and peace. 📷Picture 2:Multi-layer openwork ivory nested ball, late Qing dynasty. Height: 15.5 cm; ball diameter: 5.2 cm. The ivory ball consists of seven layers, all freely rotatable. Each layer is pierced with fourteen circular openings. The outermost layer is decorated in relief with flowering trees, human figures, and pavilions and towers, while the inner layers feature star-shaped and circular openwork patterns. It is currently preserved in the Palace Museum. 📷Picture 3:Openwork ivory carved nested ball, late Qing dynasty. Total length including the chain: 51.2 cm; ball diameter: 10 cm. The ivory piece is composed of three parts: a hook carved in the form of a Loong head with a fish body, an openwork ball, and a pendant depicting the Twin Immortals of Harmony and Union. Rings, chains, and spiral locking sockets connect the hook, ball, and pendant. The openwork ball contains sixteen layers, each pierced with twelve openings, with each layer measuring less than two millimeters in thickness. The outermost layer is entirely carved in relief with floral and landscape motifs, while the inner fifteen layers are decorated with double-coin patterns, chrysanthemum motifs, and rice-character lattice designs. Each layer rotates freely, creating an effect that is delicate, intricate, and exquisitely translucent. The pendant below is adorned with an Pan Chang Knot(endless-knot) ornament woven with gold thread and finished with yellow silk tassels. This ivory ball was one of the luxurious decorative furnishings used within the imperial palace. It is currently preserved in the Palace Museum. 1.Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Imperial Court The Ghostwork Ball is a representative form of intangible cultural heritage craftsmanship from Guangdong Province in southern coastal China. In 2006, it was included in the first batch of China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The Ghostwork Ball (ivory nested ball) can be regarded as the most iconic technical symbol of Guangzhou ivory carving. It represents the pinnacle of the “openwork carving” technique within this heritage tradition and is one of the core reasons Guangdong ivory carving was recognized as national intangible cultural heritage. Its marvel lies in the following: the nested ball has a multi-layered structure, and without ever splitting the sphere open, the master carver completes the relief carving and openwork decoration of each inner layer—layer by layer—using only the small apertures and gaps. This is achieved with specially made long-shaft hook knives, layer-trimming knives, seam-cleaning knives, and other bespoke tools. All the layers are carved from a single solid piece of ivory. What should originally have been a solid sphere is gradually separated into five layers, ten layers, or even as many as sixty to seventy layers. Each layer is not only as thin as a cicada’s wing, but can also rotate smoothly and independently. Guangzhou ivory carvers made numerous innovations in the production of ivory balls. By the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty, craftsmen were already able to produce nested balls with more than ten layers; by the late Qing period, this number had reached several dozen layers, achieving a certain level of delicacy and ingenuity that can only be described as breathtaking and supernaturally skillful. Among the collections of today’s Palace Museum (as in the illustration above), many ivory artifacts can still be seen, which is clearly showing that during the Ming and Qing dynasties, ivory objects were one of the most important luxury ornaments and displays within the imperial and aristocratic classes. 2.Imports in Historical Records Guangdong—especially Guangzhou—was one of the most important ports on the Maritime Silk Road during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Ivory Ghostwork Balls produced there, renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship, became representative export handicrafts. They entered the imperial court as tribute while also being sold overseas, later serving as an important window for the West to understand traditional Chinese craftsmanship. As the busiest and most significant port in southern coastal China, Guangzhou’s convenient transportation networks ensured a stable supply of rare raw materials for local artisans. This, in turn, fostered the emergence and innovation of ivory carving techniques, which is also reflected in other fields, such as Cantonese hardwood furniture. Let us now take a closer look at historical records from the Song dynasty: -History of the Song Dynasty · Treatise on Food and Commodities · Regulations on Maritime TradeRecording that the Song government frequently traded gold, silver, porcelain, and other goods for luxury items such as ivory and rhinoceros horn from overseas. The text notes that a single import of ivory could exceed 7,000 jin (over 3,500 kilograms), providing ample raw material to support the development of ivory carving. -Collected Drafts of the Song Administrative Statutes · Foreign Peoples, Volume SevenRecording that during the Huangyou era, the value of imported luxury goods such as ivory and rhinoceros horns exceeded 530,000 strings of cash. In the first year of the Tiansheng era, envoys from the Dashi (The Arab Empire) crossed the seas to Guangzhou, and the tribute they brought also included precious things such as ivory. 3.Current Status and Future Development Today, elephant hunting is prohibited by law in many regions and is subject to strong moral condemnation. In China, smuggling ivory products carries extremely severe legal penalties. In order to preserve and continue the tradition of ivory carving, many craftsmen and merchants have now turned to alternative materials such as deer antler or animal bone for their creative work. In addition, in northern China and neighboring regions of Siberia, large reserves of mammoth ivory remain buried underground. These prehistoric giants once lived on the same lands during the Ice Age. With proven reserves, mammoth ivory entered a system of commercialized extraction and processing. Today, many artisans use this material as a substitute for wild elephant ivory, allowing traditional ivory-carving techniques to continue without harming living animals. If you are fascinated by Ghostwork Balls, you might consider purchasing one on a cross-border e-commerce platform to display at home. For around $50–$100 USD on Taobao or other Chinese platforms, you can own a multi-layered Ghostwork ball—no luck required, ownership guaranteed! Of course, you can also return to the game and be tempted once more by that Harmonic Core. May good fortune be with you today and always! Author:小歪 Translator:西西 Review:宰秋, 旺仔
