India has been ranked the second loneliest country in the world in a June 2026 global study that examined emotional well-being and social isolation across 36 nations, highlighting a growing gap between physical living conditions and mental health.

JB.com places Turkey at the top of the list, followed by India and Brazil, based on a composite “loneliness score” that factors in isolation, sadness, and household patterns.
India recorded a loneliness score of 89, second only to Turkey’s 100. According to the study, 58 percent of respondents in India reported feelings of loneliness, while 34 percent said they frequently feel isolated.
The findings also revealed that 37 percent of Indians experience frequent sadness, the highest among the top five countries, pointing to deeper emotional distress within the population.
Despite strong traditional family structures, the report highlights a surprising contrast in India. Only 3.7 percent of households are single-person homes, and the average household size is more than four members, yet feelings of loneliness remain high.
“This suggests loneliness in India is emotional rather than physical,” the study noted, indicating that many individuals feel disconnected even while living with family or in shared households.
Turkey, ranked first, also showed high levels of emotional distress, with 61 percent of people reporting loneliness and 45 percent feeling isolated. Around 31 percent reported frequent sadness, while a notable share of households consist of single individuals.
The study concludes that loneliness in both countries reflects not just living arrangements but deeper emotional and social disconnect in modern society.
