The #GradStudentTax? Gone. The #StudentBan? Gone for now. We're 2-0. Don't worry. We'll be ready for whatever comes next. Let's just say I'm not planning on being 2-1. #BringItOn

ICYMI #StudentBan tips from the guy who helped beat the 2017 gradstudenttax..

Well, it finally happened. This #ICE International #StudentBan got me back into the “organizing effective lobbying action via twitter” game. Want to make sure our lovely international students can keep their visas? Here’s how to do it: THREAD. thehill.com/homenews/adminis… 1/14

Almost forgot about the #GradStudentTax. Republicans seek to brutally gut education, while centrist libs like Cuomo will slowly bleed us dry. We need better options to not just to defend education, but to champion it.

OpEds are actually one of the best tools around to beat the #StudentBan. They were a huge tool in opposing the #GradStudentTax in ’17, and are shockingly powerful. (Here’s one I wrote back then for an example). chrismarsicano.com/wp-conten… 8/14

How academics can fight the #StudentBand, from one of the architects of the #GradStudentTax. Tweet, OpEds, call your representatives like our lives depend on it, because they do. #Resist

Nice thread here on steps you can take to stop the #StudentBan. This policy will either: - Force international students out of our country (lots of negative consequences) - Force schools to go in-person (putting lives in danger) We stopped #gradstudenttax let’s stop this

There are no guarantees here, but the polls moved pretty quickly on the #GradStudentTax and the #MuslimBan using these same tactics. I hope I'm right that the same could happen here. But institutions should 100 percent plan for a future where I'm wrong. It is just common sense.

In 2017, I offered some advice in a twitter thread about how graduate students could stop the #GradStudentTax. Well, we won that battle. So, let’s buckle up and use the same principles to win this one against the #StudentBan. x.com/ChrisMarsicano/status/… 3/14

As y'all know, I study higher ed lobbyists and used to work for one. A friend asked how I would lobby against the Graduate School Tuition Waiver Tax if I were still in the game. I thought about it, and here’s how I would tell students to oppose the #GradStudentTax (Thread): 1/19

Remember the #GradStudentTax? AFT union members played a huge roll in making sure that didn't happen! #AcademicTwitter #UnionPower

In the past decade, I: - Played a role in helping a small HBCU thrive - Brought Nashville to Belfast - Helped lead a national movement against the #GradStudentTax - Finished 3 degrees including a PhD - Taught hundreds of students at 3 institutions. And most importantly... 1/2

It was today two years ago that we officially defeated the #GradStudentTax. Thanks to all who marched, wrote letters, wrote op-eds, and took other action to make sure that grad students aren't taxed on a value 400% of what they actually earn.

Oh definitely. I didn’t help lead the #GradStudentTax fight only to have it undone because of this.
When we organized and fought the #GradStudentTax a few years ago, two of the components of the TCJA that we weren’t able to stop were the #EndowmentTax and changes to taxes on unrelated business income. Now Harvard will pay $50M in taxes. 1/3 insidehighered.com/quicktake…

Hi Sarah! I work with lobbyists for higher education and was a big part of the opposition to the #gradstudenttax when the #TCJA was going through Congress. DM me, and we can set up a time to talk over the phone re: science advocacy. Thanks @b_juice20 for the tag!

Chris — I was re-reading your supergreat thread on how to oppose the #GradStudentTax in 2017. In retrospect, how do you think it actually played out? What worked? What didn't? Would you change any of this advice for next time?

Replying to @ChrisMarsicano
That’s how I would tell #gradstudents to oppose the #GradStudentTax if I was still a lobbyist. But I’m not, so I defer to actual university lobbyists who do incredible work. If you hear something different from them, listen to them. Trust me, they know what they are doing. 19/19.
