Graphics Handbook (Ken Garland)
Editor: Ken Garland
Publisher: Reinhold/Studio Vista
Publication: 1966
(Foreword) 'Graphic design is dependent for its effectiveness on many skills and technologies such as printing, photography and paper-making. Equally, the result of the graphic designer's skill affects a large, and increasing, number of recipients. In the production of periodicals, product information, directional signs, promotion devices, company house style and film credit titles, he may be in the key co-ordinating position.
This manual attempts to define the media which are at the disposal of the graphic designer, to clarify the nature and scope of visual information as it relates to his work, and to supply in tabular form hard facts which are the essential background to any serious effort in this field.
This tabulated information, in verbal and diagrammatic form, is the core of the book and should make it an indispensable tool for all those concerned with the proper use of graphic design. The author, who was formerly art editor of Design magazine, is a well-known graphic design consultant and photographer. He has taught typography and graphic design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and is a governor of Hornsey College of Art, London.'
