東海道吉田 とうかいどうよしだ Yoshida at Tokaido Traveling with a Companion - an Exciting Feeling At the 34th station on the Tokaido, “Fujimi Chaya” in Yoshida now called Fudagicho, Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture where there is the trace of an officially appointed inn. It is written as “Fujimi Chaya” (Viewing Fuji Tea House) which is famous for a good view of Mt. Fuji. The woman in the shop is pointing toward Mt. Fuji explaining to two traveling women. 尾州不士見原 びしゅうふじみがはら Fuji View Field in Owari Province Oh, Where is Mount Fuji? Hokusai probably saw this scene, now from Fujimi-Cho, Chuo Ward, Naogya City, Aichi Prefecture. He had been there for a certain period of time. Therefore he possibly knew well that Mt. Fuji was out of sight from there. 東海道江尻田子の浦略図 とうかいどうえじりたごのうらりゃくず Shore of Tago Bay, Ejiri at Tokaido Hokusai’s Classic Scene, a Boat Braving the Sea with the Majestic Mt. Fuji in the Background This is a station on the Tokaido - today near Shimizu Ward in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture and Tago Bay located at the port of JR Yoshiwara Station in Fuji City. We can see the fierce waves and the two boats, and several fishermen desperately rowing the turret, but boats and waves are Hokusai’s favorite subjects. This print refers to the poem saying “when you go to Tago no Ura, you can see snowing on top of white Mt. 諸人登山 しょじんとざん Climbing on Fuji Where is this? In the series depicting Mt. Fuji from all over Japan, this is the first print to be set in the Mt. Fuji itself. It is a print of the people of the Fuji religion in the summer season, going around the crater at the top of the mountain. It is thought to be one of the finishing touches to the 36 Views of Mt. Fuji. Even after Hokusai had drawn these 36 Views, he was not satisfied and moved on the next 100 Views of Mt. 駿州大野新田 すんしゅうおおのしんでん Ono Shinden in Suruga Province The Cow’s legs like Dancing Present-day Fuji City in Shizuoka Prefecture. Five cows are slowly moving under their burdent of dead grass. In this series (36 Views), it is the only a picture of cows, but it is not just cows ambling along, as its feet are light and seem to dance along. 駿州片倉茶園ノ不二 すんしゅうかたくらちゃえんのふじ The Tea Plantation of Katakura in Suruga Province Smelling of Newly Picked Tea Leaves! This print shows the tea-growing “Sunshu” area at the central part of Shizuoka Prefecture. Mt. Fuji is covered with snow, so was this painted late in April? At tea-picking season, the tea leaves had a withered color, and people were painted in a quiet atmosphere. Hokusai seems to have simply drawn, “Suruga-no Kuni is known for the fragrance of tea”. 武州千住 ぶしゅうせんじゅ Senju, Musashi Province Hokusai’s Favorite: Geometrical Patterns Senju is the starting post of the Oshu Road which flourishes together with the other three post stations: Itabashi, Shinagawa and Naito-Shinjuku. Hokusai seemed to show Mt. 東海道品川御殿山ノ不二 とうかいどうしながわごてんやまのふじ Goten-yama-hill, Shinagawa on the Tokaido Beautiful Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom Spring Time in Japan Shinagawa station is near Kita-shinagawa, Shinagawa City. It is the first station that goes west along the Tokaido, and it is an inn serving people coming to Edo. People unpacked and washed off the dust of their journey. This hill named Gotenyama has been a famous beauty spot since the 8th Shogun General Yoshimune planted cherry blossoms here in Edo Period. This print of the cherry blossoms in full bloom, which we see for the first time in the 36 Views of Mt. Fuji, shows the cherry blossoms as if climbing to the sky, and Mt. 登戸浦 のぶとうら Bay of Nobuto Digging for Clams Nobutoura was located in Chuo Ward, Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture. It used to be an important point for traffic close to the coastline. The arrangement of these large and small torii gates is interesting. We can see Mt. Fuji behind the big gate. The children who live nearby running around in the shallows are cute. People are enjoying the digging for clams. 武陽佃嶌 ぶようつくだじま Tsukuda Island in Musashi Province A Lot of Different Boats in This Bay! The island was in Edo, presently near the southeastern zone of Chuo City, Tokyo. In the Edo period, the small island was famous for catch of “shirauo” (white small river fish) and “tsukudani” (soy-sauce seasoned boiled fish). At the center was a place of pier workers and was Tsukudajima on the back side. The Daimyo procession drawn in the foreground is probably a party on the way back to country town. 深川万年橋下 ふかがわまんねんばしした Under Mannen Bridge at Fukagawa The Strange Bridge, Was it Really There? The arched Mannen Bridge at Fukagawa, with its beams extremely elongated, might it be so designed as to make easy the boats to pass through? This is the geometric composition Hokusai liked and often used. Mt.
