5. The expectation that we should love what we do. This also feeds the idea that we shouldn't be compensated appropriately because we're doing "important work," and that should be compensation enough.

4. The hours lack of resources. Higher ed keeps taking budget cuts, but we're asked to keep doing the same things. That often falls to entry/mid level SA staff. And since many are salaried, they just have to work longer hours to complete their jobs.

3. Esp. for colleges that aren't in large cities, the massive lack of mental health care. We want to recruit diverse employees, but we don't ensure that there is diverse mental health care available for them. Or any mental health care in more rural regions.

2. Our systemic racism, sexism, ageism, and ableism, to name a few, but likely not all. This wears on anyone coming from an oppressed culture. On top of that, we often ask them to be mentors/representatives for their identity with our students.

And even if I can’t ever train all the people without mental illness how to support those of us with it, at least I was able to be there for that one person with mental illness to know they’re not alone.

I’d do it once a week for the rest of my life (or more) if it meant staff in higher ed was better prepared to support those experiencing mental illness.
