Pakistan’s universities are stuck in a vicious cycle: grand buildings with no real intellectual professors, endless papers with no solutions, and local ideas dismissed until a “gora” expert repeats them. Time to break the intellectual dependency
Politicians love cutting ribbons on shiny campuses, but forget that universities are about thought and research, not just concrete. We’re running professor-less institutions filled with junior & part-time staff. Brain drain, forced retirements at 60, pathetic salaries, bureaucratic delays, and zero respect for academics have hollowed out our faculty. Professors should lead — not chase admin posts. Restore autonomy, end the grade treadmill, and let merit & professional associations drive hiring & promotions.

Producing papers, not solutions.
HEC’s obsession with Scopus counts, impact factors & h-indexes turned research into a numbers game. Academics churn out micro-studies and safe regressions for foreign journals while ignoring Pakistan’s real crises — land markets, energy pricing, tax reform, state capacity.
We reward quantity over local relevance and policy impact. Result? Thousands of papers, zero influence on national problems..

3/ The Gora Complex.
Local scholarship on demographics, growth traps, and institutional reform gets ignored until an Oxford professor or World Bank visitor says the same thing with a foreign accent — then it’s headline news.
We crowd out our own thinkers and treat foreign validation as the ultimate authority. This is intellectual displacement. A confident nation cites its own researchers first, debates imported ideas rigorously, and builds domestic intellectual sovereignty instead of waiting for external endorsement.

Pakistan deserves universities that solve Pakistani problems — led by respected Pakistani real professors cum intellectuals whose ideas matter at home first.
End the buildings-over-brains model.
Reward problems solving over metrics.
Stop outsourcing thinking and authority.
