World Bicycle Day and we need to stop pretending this is straightforward. In every road case I deal with involving cyclists and drivers, the pattern is the same: everyone believed they were in the right… until the evidence said otherwise. Cyclists have every legal right to use the road. Drivers have a duty of care to them. But here’s the reality: rights don’t prevent collisions, behaviour does. Most incidents aren’t about intent. They’re about assumption. Drivers assume cyclists are visible. Cyclists assume drivers have seen them. And both assume the Highway Code is being followed in real time. It often isn’t. The law doesn’t deal in feelings or assumptions. It deals in evidence. So the real question on World Bicycle Day isn’t who’s to blame? It’s why we’re still surprised when shared roads create conflict in the first place. #WorldBicycleDay #RoadSafety #Cyclists #Drivers #UKLaw #TrafficLaw #HighwayCode @gcntweet @BritishCycling @cyclingweekly

New zebra crossing at Blackfriars Station floating bus stop. We have tried to explain to @cityoflondon why these bus stops are not safe or accessible for blind people but more are being planned. @citylordmayor can we urgently meet to discuss our concerns please. This is dangerous

95 years ago, the first Highway Code was published. It cost one penny, and had advice for horse-drawn carriages. Since 1931, it's helped cut road deaths in half despite a tenfold increase in vehicles. Still one of the most important books in print. Happy birthday, #HighwayCode!

To keep every road user safe, slow down to 10mph and give horses at least 2m space, and avoid revving or flashing lights. Let’s prevent tragic incidents. See #HighwayCode guidance (link in comments). #RoadSafety #ShareTheRoad

Rule 107 of the Highway Code states DVSA officers have the power to stop vehicles on all GB roads. They will attract your attention by flashing amber lights. It is an offence not to comply with their directions. You must obey any signals given. #HighwayCode

.@LancsPolice don't consider the #HighwayCode to be anything drivers should care about. Why bother stopping even when you easily can? Clearly, they believe Amber is simply another Green. Certainly it is for all bad drivers. #LancashirePolice are too lazy to prosecute the offence!

When driving you should give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders plenty of space. 🌧️ Pay close attention to any sudden change of direction they may have to make and give them enough room. Find out more:👇 ow.ly/WJBT50Y8F9H #HighwayCode

@highwaycode this might be a useful account for understanding the various speed limits in the UK, I know it can be easy to confuse what a 30 means.

Drivers shouldn’t need a visible deterrent to follow the #HighwayCode or understand the rules. Blocking emergency vehicles is a clear sign of driver’s arrogance & sense of entitlement. Let’s hope they all receive points & a fine.

.@StagecoachMCSL Why do most ppl hate bus #drivers? Like this 1, most think roads are entirely their property! Rules apply only to others! #highwaycode Newsflash: RED #traffic_light means STOP - INCLUDING BUSES!
