Francis Hopkinson was an accomplished musician, organist at Christ Church in Philadelphia, and fancied himself a poet. Born a Philadelphian, he signed the Declaration as a representative of New Jersey, having married Ann Borden from that state.

In 1766, at age 29, Francis Hopkinson traveled to London from Philadelphia and lived with the artist Benjamin West. His deceased father, Thomas Hopkinson, had been close friends with Ben Franklin, who was the colonial representative in London at the time. Francis wrote to his mother: "Mr. & Mrs. West entertain me with the utmost Hospitality -- this House is my home in London, where I live quite agreeably."
