Who remembers??
#HowardsWay was a British drama series that aired from 1985 to 1990. It focused on the lives and rivalries of families involved in the yachting and marine business along the south coast of England. Often called the "Dallas of the Solent," the show mixed glamour, ambition, and personal drama.
The series was created by Gerard Glaister, who had also produced Secret Army. It was originally intended as a one-off drama but was expanded into a full series after
#BBC executives saw its potential for primetime appeal.
Much of the sailing footage was filmed in and around the River Hamble and Solent waters. The production team worked closely with real sailing crews, and the cast had to train to handle yachts convincingly on camera.
The fashion and style of the show had a major influence on British viewers in the late 1980s. The characters’ designer clothes and business-chic look sparked trends, especially among viewers drawn to the show’s aspirational tone.
Actor Maurice Colbourne, who played main character Tom Howard, died suddenly during the filming of the fifth series. His unexpected death forced major script changes and brought a noticeable shift in the show’s tone for the final season.
The theme music, composed by Simon May, became a hit in its own right. Its sweeping orchestral style captured the show’s tone perfectly and was later released as a single, becoming one of the most recognised TV themes of the decade.
Although often dismissed as soap-like, Howards’ Way tackled business ethics, class divides, and the changing role of women in the workplace. Its mix of escapism and real-world issues helped it maintain a loyal audience throughout its run.
