Both parties expressed interest to co-develop values-based modules for the implementation of the Parent Effectiveness Service (PES), a national program committed to enriching the knowledge and skills of Filipino parents and parent-substitutes in responding to their parental duties and responsibilities. The meeting also covered updates on adoption policies that ensures the child’s background and best interests are taken into account, along with ongoing government efforts to end all forms of violence and abuse against children. Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary @rex_gatchalian meets on Thursday (May 15) with delegates from the European Union (EU) to discuss the joint initiatives of the Department and the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in ensuring a more seamless, inclusive, and empowering electoral process for vulnerable groups. The EU team, led by Legal Analyst Mercer Castells Vicente, lauded the government’s call to establish early voting hours for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and pregnant mothers, citing it as one of the best practices of the May 12 midterm elections. Secretary Gatchalian, alongside Undersecretary Emmeline Aglipay-Villar and Asst. Secretary Ellaine Fallacurna of the DSWD’s International Affairs, Attached and Supervised Agencies (IASAs), also briefed the EU executives on the recently-signed memorandum of agreement (MOA) of the DSWD, the National Council for Disability Affairs (NCDA), and the COMELEC. The tripartite agreement is part of the DSWD’s broader efforts to elevate the voting experience of senior citizens and persons with disabilities, and dismantle barriers that hinder the full exercise of their right to suffrage. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) launched its intergenerational project, "Apo Ko: Kwento ni Lolo't Lola, Gabay ng Kabataan," on Thursday (February 20) at the Haven for the Elderly in Tanay, Rizal. This timely project aims to build on the strengths of the elderly sector in giving guidance to young children through their stories filled with wisdom and values gained from their years of experience. Undersecretary Emmeline Aglipay Villar of the DSWD's International Affairs, Attached and Supervised Agencies (IASAs) Group delivered the message of Secretary @rex_gatchalian underlining the importance of the project which recognizes the role of ‘lolos’ and ‘lolas’ as the pillars of society and the youth as the hope of the country’s future. In the pilot implementation, the lolos and lolas from the DSWD's Haven for the Elderly and Golden Reception and Action Center (GRACES) will be having story-bonding sessions dubbed as "Apo, Lola, Lolo Sessions and interactive activities called "Legacy Labs" with 4 to 5-year-olds in child development centers. The media re-launch aims to raise public awareness on Angel Pets, a collaborative program of the DSWD and the PAWS that seeks to tap on animal-assisted therapy to enhance the therapeutic and healing interventions for the clients of the agency-managed centers and residential care facilities (CRCFs). During the event, Secretary Gatchalian shared a short, light-hearted interaction with the PAWS’ emotional support dogs dubbed ‘Dr. Dogs’ as they conducted fun-filled therapy sessions with the adult women of the Sanctuary Center.
