Conventional wisdom is that farmers can get away with planting a lower population early and should increase if planting late. Our data may suggest otherwise. Over the past few years we have consistently seen an advantage to higher populations across planting dates. #ILFOCUS

Visitors at our #ILFocus site this summer learned about our project evaluating the use of defoliant to streamline soybean harvest in certain situations. Here are the results from this project in 2021. We’re planning to continue this research in 2022.

We often see yield increases from fungicide application, even in low disease pressure fields, as was the case in 2021. This graph shows the improvement in general disease score (1 is best) from R3 fungicide in soybeans. #ILFocus #Delaro #Bayer4IL

Here's some more #ILFocus data: Over the past 3 years across 7 locations and 6 populations, we've seen an average 5.5 bushel/acre yield increase in #soybeans. This translates to $71.47 more in a grower's pocket when accounting for crop value and fungicide cost. #Delaro #Bayer4IL

Yield is not the only consideration when determining planting rates. Pops can also affect other factors like soybean standability. This graph illustrates that row spacing has very little effect on lodging, but higher populations can decrease standability. #ILFocus #Bayer4IL

Here is a summary of 4 years of soybean yield performance by planting date. This research was conducted at 4 #ILFocus sites in central and northern Illinois. As you can see, planting early provides the greatest chance for maximum yield potential.

We planted corn and soybeans across the same 8 planting dates in 2021, with the exception of only planting beans on March 10. This graph illustrates the point that planting soybeans early gives us the best chance for max yield, but the window for corn is much smaller. #ILFocus
