⚡🇮🇳 India has started fighting Russian #ShadowFleet. Its leading ship certifier IRClass has de-classed 235 tankers & gas carriers since 2023 - all tied to #WesternSanctions on Russia & Iran. This removes their ability to get proper insurance and easy port access, per @Reuters. Unlike China, which openly defies U.S. sanctions, India is tightening rules & even rejected sanctioned 🇷🇺LNG last month. This is one of the most effective real-world enforcement moves against sanctions evasion so far - shrinking the dark fleet that keeps Putin’s war-funded oil flowing. Real enforcement is possible - when the will exists. #Geopolitics
India Tightens the Screws on Sanctioned Tankers
The Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass/IRS), one of the world's largest ship classification societies, is taking a tougher stance on sanction-linked vessels, as confirmed by Reuters on 9 June.
Executive Chairman Arun Sharma stated that IRClass has de-classed 235 ships (mainly oil tankers) since 2023 and now follows a comprehensive policy of not accepting vessels with U.S., EU, or UK sanctions. This is a major blow; without classification, ships struggle to get insurance, port access, or trade effectively.
Why this matters: India is a major hub for Russian and Iranian crude, attracting shadow fleet tankers.
The move pressures older, high-risk vessels reliant on Indian crewing/survey/insurance services.
It aligns India more closely with G7 price cap enforcement and IMO efforts against risky shipping, while increasing operational headaches for the dark fleet in the Indian Ocean.
The net is tightening. A ship without class is a ship without a market.#ShadowFleet#India#IRClass#Sanctions#MaritimeSecurity
