Pakistan's press freedom crisis deepens: 5 journalists killed in 2025 alone, including AD Shar, Abdul Latif, Syed Mohammed Shah, Imtiaz Mir, and Tufail Rind. The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists reports a 60% surge in attacks (142 cases) from Nov '24-Sep '25, with 35 physical assaults, 8 arrests, and 22 cases registered under the draconian Act (PECA) to muzzle free speech. Punjab and Islamabad have become the most dangerous areas for journalists, surpassing former tribal regions. Women journalists face escalating online harassment, while journalists like Arshad Sharif, who was brutally killed in Kenya, and Imran Riaz, forced into exile, highlight the deadly risks. Matiullah Jan faces fabricated charges for his work. With 151 journalists killed since 2000, impunity remains a grave concern. The ruling elite, extremists, and terrorists are responsible for this crisis. Let's stand for a free press and demand justice. #JournalismIsNotACrime #PressFreedomPakistan #ImpunityIndex

In 1992 CPJ documented 30 journalists murdered for their work, the first year we began documenting journalist killings. Three decades later, none of their murderers have ever been brought to justice. One of these journalists — Pedro Yauri, director of the “Punto Final” news program on Radio Universal — was presumed to have been killed in Huacho, Peru. His whereabouts remain unknown, and his family still seeks justice. Pakistan ranks 12th on CPJ’s 2024 Global #ImpunityIndex, which lists countries where perpetrators who kill journalists for their work evade justice. The country has appeared on CPJ’s Global Impunity Index every year since the list’s inception in 2008. At least 39 journalists have been murdered in Pakistan in direct relation to their work since 1992, when CPJ first began tracking journalist killings; in the vast majority of these cases, nobody has been held accountable.
