One conversation at Regenerative Nexus turned into a real partnership. Greg Thoren and Bob Recker are now running corn interseeding experiments across row spacings, plant populations, and virtual fencing for grazing. Interseeding cover crops into soybeans dramatically increases plant diversity, which brings with it loads of benefits. Alex Frasier believes that his diverse cover crop actually builds moisture into his system because of the vast diversity of microorganisms, including fungi, which help plants to utilize moisture more effectively. You can hear more about Alex's experience with soybean interseeding on episode #26 of the Green Cover podcast: zurl.co/fkJo6 #CoverCrops #Interseeding #SoybeanInterseeding #RegenerativeAgriculture #Soybeans #CoverCropping

6 years of cover crops, irrigated and interseeded to give it more time, and still no soil effects. Why? Low biomass. Interseeding increased biomass from 330 to 508 lb/ac. ➡️This level of CC biomass will help with erosion, but not much else. acsess.onlinelibrary.wiley.c…

Could corn interseeding boost your profits in 2026? Grazing corn stalks after harvest is already a solid revenue opportunity but what if those stalks came with a nutritious, multi-species mix growing between the rows? Species like clover, annual ryegrass, and brassicas perform very well in a corn interseeding mix and they completely transform the nutritional value of grazing stalks. With input costs still high and grain margins tight, interseeding gives you more than a soil health win, it gives a high value grazing opportunity that can bring home real profit. Have you ever tried corn interseeding? If so, drop a comment down below! Check out our Corn Interseeding Mix: zurl.co/1GEQl #SoilHealth #CoverCrops #Soilhealth #Grazing #CoverCropping #Livestock

Farmers should graze the fields but let's learn for a decade. This quite possibly will not be viable long-term. Take advantage of it, but don't be cheerleading for centralized utilities taking over farmland. It's not all rainbows. No rotation. No interseeding. No integration.

Does corn interseeding hurt yields? In our 2025 trials, the average yield across all 30 inch interseeded plots was 135.6 bushels per acre. The control strip with no cover crop came in at 136.6. That's virtually the same. The top performing plot was actually the Fall Grazing Mix in 30 inch rows at 137 bushels per acre, edging out the control entirely. The key is row spacing. If you're comparing 30 inch interseeded corn to 30 inch conventional corn, yields can be virtually the same. If you're going to wider rows to get more forage, expect some yield tradeoff, and plan for it. That's a management decision, not a failure. Cover the ground. Feed the cattle. Don't sacrifice the corn crop to do it. That's the goal, and the data backs it up. Want to dig into the full 2025 Corn Interseeding Trials Report? Low cost wheat production with a different mindset this year. With the price of phosphorus around $900 / ton last fall I thought… I wonder if I can aggressively cycle nutrients out of last years 🌽 stalks? This field had 2 light liquid N applications last fall. Where are the corn stalks now? Coming into May 1st we’ll be close to canopy closure on this field with 1/4 of the standard wheat seeding population of @PioneerSeeds ultra early 25r800 $20/ac. No commercial MAP or Potash… just 7 gal of 32% preplant, 2 gal mixed in with fall herbicide (pint of Weedmaster) ($4.30 ac) and in the fall #150 AMS #75 urea (#91/36S) around that time 3oz of Zidua was applied with 22oz 24d Beans were planted at 130k .. 4.0 @PioneerSeeds planting them in an indexed fashion crowding 3 7” bean rows in the 30” gaps in wheat … 5 7” bean rows in the wide 45” gaps to facilitate the tractor for interseeding $20 chemical $70 seed $80 fertility Revenue potential of 🌽 going back to 🌽 next year then probably back to this .. The value for our operation is that this field will not require any operation of any kind for 80-90 days after planting the beans. Reallocating our efforts into tending to our corn and regular beans. When the combine leaves this field there is no baling of the straw. Group IV beans at R2 (beginning pod) just days after summer solstice … and it’s usually pretty clean of weeds. The “more work” is somewhat of a farce…especially if I get to the next nev where we’ll … plant plant harvest harvest 4 passes. Just need a little equipment modification

Rye after harvest doesn't cut it if you're serious about maximizing biodiversity. Corn interseeding offers the opportunity to get additional diversity in before fall temps limit your options. Plus, the value from grazing that cover crop helps corn interseeding make sense economically. Read our 2025 Corn Interseeding Report to learn more: zurl.co/p18yE Photos courtesy of Brian McClerran.
