Back in 2007 I was using NetBeans. Its GUI editor for building Swing applications was incomparable. (I tried JDeveloper and found it incomprehensible)

As an IDE geek (I worked on a bunch of those too, including Eclipse and Android Studio) I had been noticing an ebb and flow on the market. There is usually drive to make the IDE smarter and more feature rich. This results in IDE becoming more bloated - more buttons in the UI, more background threads to run indexers and what’s not. Then a new wave of tools comes out that “simple code focused editors”, fast and intuitive. In 90s there was a RAD fad (best examples were Visual Basic and Delphi) - with tools like JDeveloper and Visual Cafe. That got disrupted with “code editors” like Eclipse and IntelliJ. Eclipse was a ridiculously lightweight editor with great refactoring support when it became popular. Then Eclipse got more and more bloated. (IntelliJ was losing because is was paid). Eclipse got replaced by Sublime -> Atom -> VS Code. Now I feel like all the “AI coding” will become the bloat that will bury VS Code. I expect a new generation of “bare bones coding editors soon”. IntelliJ (e.g. CLion, PyCharm and such) is curious in that it seems to be the only surviving independent commercial IDE vendor (MS and other companies are platform vendors). So they are selling “smart” IDEs.

Faltou incluir na enquete o NetBeans e o Jdeveloper. Sou eclipseiro. Não usei os outros. Sou meio fiel e como já gravei uma porrada de teclas de atalhos, fico com a sensação de que mudar de IDE vai me fazer perder produtividade.

Started with Notepad. Editplus seemed a big improvement back then. And after that Jdeveloper was a different world altogether.
