Job Searching Approach
A week ago, I received a call asking if I offered internships. The call itself wasn’t the problem. The approach was.
I didn’t know who I was speaking to. The caller didn’t introduce themselves properly, jumped straight into asking for an internship, and sounded impatient, almost demanding. It was a missed opportunity, not because the answer was “no,” but because the first impression didn’t invite further conversation.
To those seeking internships or job opportunities, here are a few tips to help you stand out positively when reaching out:
🔹 Start with a proper introduction
State your full name, what you're studying or have studied, and your area of interest.
🔹 Be polite and professional
Remember, you're asking someone for their time and possibly an opportunity, be respectful in tone and language.
🔹 Have a clear, concise ask
Are you asking for an internship, mentorship, shadowing opportunity, or advice? Be specific.
🔹 Express genuine interest
Let the employer know why you’re reaching out to them and do your homework about the organization or person.
🔹 Practice good phone etiquette
Speak clearly, don’t rush, and always thank the person for their time, even if the answer is "not at the moment."
🔹 Follow up professionally
If you’re calling, consider following up with a short email thanking them and attaching your CV.
Sometimes it’s not the "no" that closes the door. It’s the way we knock. Let’s learn to knock better.
