Kay Lee Ray, fka Alba Fyre in WWE, says the company told her it would not be offering a new contract, an outcome she says she was already heading toward herself, speaking on @BustedOpenRadio. "I knew my contract was up," she said, noting she raised it around WrestleMania. "Unfortunately I got the phone call the next week saying that they didn't want to be offering me anything, so to me I was like, cool, this was the decision I was already heading towards anyway." She said the post-Mania timing wasn't a surprise. Reflecting on her seven-plus years: "The way it went at the end obviously wasn't great, but in past few years I got to have fun with my friends, and I got paid well for it," she said. "I wish I was given a chance to really show what I could have done on main roster." She added that her ring time kept shrinking: "Time is very short, and it wasn't increasing, it was just decreasing." Now a free agent set to wrestle in Italy for the first time, Ray listed dream opponents she's never faced, including Willow Nightingale, Mercedes Moné, and Athena. #KayLeeRay says she wasn't released as first believed, her contract simply expired and she chose to leave & not renew. Ray is clearing up what really happened with her WWE departure, as she revealed she wasn’t actually released at all. While speaking to #DailyStar, the former WWE talent explained that she did not part ways with the company in the same way as some other WWE talent. Instead, her contract simply reached its expiration date, which allowed her to return to the ring right away. “Like, for me, it happens. There seems to be a pattern with this. My contract was up, and I knew it was coming up, and I had the decision of whether I wanted to stay or not.” Ray said the situation worked differently from wrestlers who are fired and then have to wait through a 90-day non-compete clause. Since her deal ended naturally, she was free to make her surprise return for #ProWrestlingEVE in London on June 5 so quickly “I know some other people got fired and they have the 90-day clause, but because mine was just a contract ending, it means I didn’t have the 90 days, and I was able to come and do this and do it as kind of a surprise.” Kay Lee Ray also admitted the surprise may not have been perfectly hidden, but she was still happy with how everything played out: “But I know it wasn’t really a surprise. But yeah, I’m really glad it worked out this way.”

While Kay Lee Ray had a dominant start to her time in WWE – holding the NXT UK Women’s Championship for 649 recognised days, she didn’t quite reach the same heights of singles success on the main roster. Majority of the then-Alba Fyre’s WWE main roster run saw her represent teams ahead of her eventual departure, from her and Isla Dawn’s Unholy Union tag-team, to Chelsea Green’s Secret Hervice. Speaking with the Daily Star, Kay Lee Ray stated that she viewed her time in WWE as if she was an actor on a TV show playing a role. When asked if she was frustrated about the lack of singles opportunities on the main roster, Ray responded: “No, I’ve been singles for a long time, so it was good to get into some tag-team stuff with Isla. We had a good feud as well, I think we worked really well together. “I enjoyed the feud we had together, then that came into the tag-team stuff. It’s just another character for me to play, I’m always going to try to do that to my best ability. “Same with the Secret Hervice stuff, it wouldn’t have been my go-to, but I had a lot of fun doing that.” Kay Lee Ray’s mindset explains why she was able to jump into any role the company needed her in, from tough brawler to comedy character. While some stars like Ray are entertaining to watch in less-serious roles from time to time, WWE could do with having more vertical movement so that anybody who proves they can be funny doesn’t automatically have a ceiling preventing them from reaching the main event spots.

My heart still hurts...💔 I want so badly to understand but I can’t, couldn't even turn on #Smackdown last night because I felt so defeated. I'm not naive, I understand that in this business you will have to make some releases. However, the releases made no sense and I totally understand the fan outrage. Wyatt Sicks was something truly special, a way to honour Bray Wyatt and his legacy. There was still so much more to go with that group, and the stories they could've told. However, they were never given a chance; they were only forced to fight as a group, not given the opportunity to shine as individuals. Alexa Bliss never got a chance to explore more of where that connection and story could have gone with the group. Nikki has been shown behind Giulia for months, just never to be allowed to build a story or even wrestle. This truly feels like a slap in the face of the legacy they were trying to honour and build. We can also talk about how you threw the belt in Giulia just to forget about her, never allow the belt to be defended on a PLE and release wrestlers that could've helped elevate the belt especially with NXT call-ups coming in. Like Alba Fyer who could've turned on and feuded with Chelsea over the belt that meant so much to her. Alba was someone who never was given a chance to show her full potential. It's been reported that originally Alister Black and Zelina Vega were supposed to be involved in the Cody Rhodes Vs Randy Orton storyline. Something that made sense, an angle for all wrestlers to be involved in something with meaning. However, instead we got Pat MagaFee (thanks punk) being added to the match as an attempt to drive ticket sales. Adding celebrities to a match with a 20-year history, instead of the involvement of a wrestler who had previously beat Randy Orton, someone who was quietly lurking behind the scenes with intent. Kairi Sane, being part of an 8-month active story build that was snubbed off of Mania weekend. A story that has a lot of fans invested in its outcome. Being part of an active tag team, in a red-hot tag division. A beloved wrestler both by fans and behind the scenes, the sweetest soul being treated with no respect or dignity. The sky was truly the limit for her when she was finished with this storyline and fans were excited for her run as a singles star and eventually being in the IC title scene. I hope that these wrestlers and the rest of the releases are able to go somewhere they are truly valued. Where their talent is actually utilized and they can shine as they deserve. I understand if none of them ever step foot in a WWE ring again after this, however I do hope they find their way back. My heart goes out to those released from their dream, their livelihood.
