It's a good thing that chibi noodle dragons are not considered puff applicable as the most harm we are likely to cause is an over abundance of belly rubs. Larry Corriea is so cool, I met him at LTUE a few years ago and he invited me to dinner with some other authors.

My favorite part of LTUE was when Card—two panels in a row—laid waste to all of the editors on stage without breaking a sweat.

It’s a combo. Short version, highly literate culture. Readers produce writers. Specific logistical reasons, Dave Wolverton was the creative writing teacher for most of your list. And Dave Doerings old school LTUE conference in Utah created a really helpful writer network for that generation of writers. Sincerely- yet another New York Times bestselling fantasy author Mormon.

BYU starting in the 70s had a great creative writing program actually focused on publishing. Those authors were all associated with it. It led to the creation of LTUE, which was an amazing writer's conference. It later separated from BYU, and as of several years ago had gotten pretty woke, which is when we stopped attending. But more have popped up and the Utah writing scene is very supportive, generally affordable for new writers to join, and is constantly growing. To the point I've heard a lot of successful Utah authors be asked by NY publishing, "What's going on in Utah with writing?" Because there's more successful writers coming out per capita than anywhere else.

The argument I made when I was Guest of Honor at LTUE in 2020 was that LDS grow up with the lore of the church. And I am not talking scriptures nor doctrine. I am talking the events of the church as they unfolded, from the First Vision, through the persecution in the Eastern U.S., and on to the plains crossing, the travails of the handcart companies (which we now re-enact with the youth every four years) and so forth. This lore tunes a lot of LDS to thinking of life as a saga. And most good fantasy literature is often written as saga. Tolkien's Middle-Earth fiction is absolutely 100% saga. So, for literary LDS with a creative mind for writing, it's inevitable that many of us drift to saga narrative. Because many of us grew up with saga as part of the fabric of our lives.

I did this challenge successfully, about thirty years ago. I can't eat that much now. Fun establishing shot of my hometown. Also, this sandwich joint is directly across the street from the venue where LTUE is held every year. And they do make great sandwiches. youtube.com/watch?v=8a_yrSjQ…

The tenth of the LTUE Benefit Anthologies, Iron Horses in the Sky, is open for submissions of science fiction and fantasy stories and poetry featuring trains. Think space trains. Magical trains. Cargo trains. They have to obviously be trains and not just single vehicles or single streetcars (longer trains are better!). Make your stories fun to read, make the characters interesting, and make us grin. The tales must have heart, must be solid stories, and must be positive in their outlook. This is a benefit/charity anthology, so stories are donated and authors receive no monetary compensation. Authors receive one copy of the anthology in each format in which it is released (print and epub at a minimum). Stories and poems must feature science fiction or fantasy trains. Stories and poems do not have to be set on Earth or even in this universe. Story and poem characters and settings must be your own. Do not use other creators’ characters or settings or generative AI/LLM. Stories and poems can be any length up to 17,500 words. Stories and poems can be unpublished or reprint stories. Up to two submissions per author. No simultaneous submissions. Stories and poems are due by Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 11:59pm Mountain Time. Acceptances or rejections will be sent by Monday, August 31, 2026, and acceptances will be accompanied by a publication contract with all the details. The anthology will be released during the LTUE symposium in February 2028 (note the year!) in electronic and printed form, and possibly audio format. For all the details, see the full call for submissions here: hemelein.com/2026/02/20/call…

Six Years Ago, I asked @Sverizona during a writer's panel about military jargon at LTUE if she'd "be my dependa". It's been working out so far. 😃 Happy Valentine's Day, honey.
