🔬 Lab Spotlight | Dr. Souvik Mukherjee’s Research Group
At BRIC–NIBMG, the Human Microbiome Research (HMR) team led by Dr. Souvik Mukherjee is advancing research on how microbiome changes influence major health challenges in India.
As part of this mission, the Diabetic Retinopathy Microbiome Study (DRMS)–India is being conducted in collaboration with
@lvpei , Hyderabad. This large-scale, multi-centre effort involves approximately 500 participants — including healthy individuals, those with diabetes mellitus (DM), and those with diabetic retinopathy (DR) — recruited from 17 eye hospitals across India.
India is among the top three countries globally in diabetes prevalence, and according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the number of people with diabetes here is projected to increase by nearly 75% in the next 25 years. DR, the most common and earliest detectable microvascular complication of DM, can cause irreversible vision loss if left untreated.
Our team’s work focuses on:
🔍 Identify gut microbiome differences that mark the progression from DM to DR.
🧮 Developing a clinic-friendly Microbial Index Score to assess DR risk and progression.
🧪 Design a probiotic-based intervention to slow or prevent the transition from DM to DR in the future.
Through this collaborative initiative, BRIC–NIBMG aims to translate microbiome discoveries into accessible clinical tools for early detection and prevention, protecting vision and improving diabetes care.
