5/x Airborne actual space launches (satellites) have been conducted multiple times, e.g. Virgin Orbit's LauncherOne, and Northrop's Pegasus. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northr…

Can't believe it's now been over a decade since I saw their 747 introduced at KSAT. That was when Virgin Galactic was preparing her for use with LauncherOne (RIP).

Little-known fun fact: the upper stage was an entire LauncherOne.

This is a travesty Vulcan is probably the best expendable launch vehicle that will ever exist. And LauncherOne was cool, just operated by a company with terrible business skills. And Saturn I was a shitheap

You have been selected to be shot into space! (Willingly or not!) But you get to choose who to send you! Government Agencies: NASA (United States) - Numerous launches including Apollo, Space Shuttle, and various satellite missions. Roscosmos (Russia) - Known for the Soyuz program, among others. CNSA (China) - Launched numerous rockets including Long March series. ISRO (India) - Notable for the PSLV and GSLV launches. CNES (France) - Participated in Ariane launches through the European Space Agency. SUPARCO (Pakistan) - Achieved sub-orbital launches. DLR (German Aerospace Center, Germany) - Contributed to European space efforts. European Space Agency (ESA) - Operates the Ariane series of launch vehicles. JAXA (Japan) - Known for H-IIA, H-IIB, and Epsilon rockets. Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) - Launched the VLS rocket. Israeli Space Agency - Involved in Shavit launches. Private Companies: SpaceX - Falcon 1, Falcon 9, and Falcon Heavy, among others. Blue Origin - New Shepard for sub-orbital flights, working on New Glenn. Orbital Sciences (now Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems) - Taurus, Pegasus, and Antares. Arianespace - Commercial operator of Ariane rockets for ESA. Rocket Lab - Electron rocket for small satellite launches. United Launch Alliance (ULA) - Atlas V, Delta IV, and the upcoming Vulcan Centaur. Virgin Galactic - LauncherOne for small satellites (air-launched). Firefly Aerospace - Alpha rocket for small payload missions. Relativity Space - Developing the Terran 1 rocket. Astra - Rocket 3 for small satellite launches. #zelena Who are you trusting with the mission?

This is something I called out at the time - imagine thinking a rocket smaller than Electron could carry more mass than LauncherOne πŸ’€ Sadly a lot of people lost $ buying into numbers like these (among many other claims, #DailyLaunchBy2025) Video source: youtube.com/watch?v=SrJ_nJt0…

I'm old enough to remember when LauncherOne, RS1, and Terran 1 (aka "most pre-sold rocket in history") signed flashy bulk launch deals as well πŸ˜…

At least in the case of Oman it wasn't such a deal: the nation had launched 2 same cubesats built by a Poland company, only for the 1st to fail to reach orbit (on the last LauncherOne from the UK) & the 2nd one failed to deploy (on Falcon 9/Transporter 9). space.skyrocket.de/doc_sdat/…

Pegasus, a last gen solid rocket, cost around 40 million a flight. Electron costs around 8 million. Pegasus could lift 450kg, electron can do around 320. Solids arent inherently cheaper. If you want to compare airlaunch to airlaunch, launcherone was about 12M.
