Three retired police dogs. Less than a month. Nearly £10,000 in tests. And still people ask: “Where’s their pension?” There isn’t one. No automatic care. No safety net. So we step in — because they need help now. They served us. Now it’s our turn. 🐾💙 #LifeAfterService

Remembering the beautiful retired British Army Search Dog Tink April 2023 💔🌈🐾 Tink had 8 amazing years of retirement, and in that time, she did something just as important as her service. She helped guide her little hooman through 7 years of his life… from the day he came home from the hospital, to the day they had to say goodbye. We know he and all of her family, miss her deeply. And we know she’ll always be watching over them 💜 Tink began her career in America 🇺🇸 before making her way to the UK 🇬🇧, where she was paired with her British E2 handler. Together, they deployed to Afghanistan 🇦🇫 She lived alongside her handler on a Patrol Base, deploying on operations, doing what she did best, finding IEDs, keeping people safe, and being that familiar Labrador face that could lift a team on even the hardest days. Tink proved herself time and time again so much so that she remained in theatre to complete back-to-back tours 🐕 In January 2015, her first handler received the news Tink was retiring. She came home… not just as a working dog, but as family. And she was exactly that. A loved, pampered, and cherished member of the household who embraced retirement with everything she had 🏡👦🐕 This well-travelled hero turned 12 in November 2022, spending 8 incredible years with her family before her body could no longer fight the effects of age. Surrounded by love, she crossed the rainbow bridge 🌈💔🐾🥀 But like all good dogs she hasn’t really left. She’s just waiting. Watching over them until they meet again at the reorg. Thank you to Adam and family for giving her the life she deserved. Because no matter how much time passes we know she is missed. Always. Lest we forget 💜 #HeroPaws #LifeAfterService #MWD #Search #Afghanistan

🎉 Happy Double Dogit Birthday 🎉 British Military Working Dog Balou 🐾🇬🇧 October 2020, the pawesome Balou hung up his working harness after his service as a British Army protection dog, stepping into the next chapter with the rehome team at DATR. And what a chapter it became… By February 2021, RMWD Balou had strolled off into the sunset (or mist 🇬🇧) with his new hooman guardians, and he hasn’t looked back since. A life earned. A retirement deserved. Now out in the big, wide world, living his best life, full of adventure, love, and plenty of scoobie snacks 🦴 Behind that transition was the incredible MARC team at DATR, who worked tirelessly to prepare Balou for life beyond service, giving him the best possible start to his civilian adventures. Balou, you truly were one of the lucky ones 💙 Here’s to many more years of happiness, health, and unforgettable adventures with your family. 🎊 Happy Double Dogit Birthday, hero 🎊 #BirthdayCelebrations #lifeafterservice #RetiredNotDiscarded #malinoislove #HeroesWithPaws @datr_official @1_mwd @forcesnews

Let’s say hello to Retired Royal Air Force Police Search Dog Scratch 🐾 Scratch served as a Vehicle Search Dog, completing her service with the RAF out in Cyprus, RAF Akrotiri, before hanging up her harness in 2023 at 8 years old. Now approaching 12 this summer, she’s taken to retirement exactly how every working dog should… Like a pro. These days, Scratch spends her time: – Sleeping on her sofa (as it should be) – Sampling “our” food… regularly – Playing ball like it’s still operational duty In fact, she’s seamlessly retrained herself, now expertly signalling on tennis balls and dog treats instead of IEDs… a skillset we fully support. Now living the good life on the South Dorset coast, Scratch is everything retirement should look like, safe, loved, and exactly where she belongs. Service complete. Duty honoured. Now living the life she earned. Thank you for your service, Scratch. 🫡❤️ Retired does not mean discarded. @royalairforcepolice @rafakrotiri @rafbf @datr_official #RetiredNotDiscarded #labradorlife #Searchdog #lifeafterservice #HeroesWithPaws

Happy Retireiversery to the handsomest RAF Police Dog, Ozzie 🎉🐾 Procured by the British Army and trained at the DATR, Ozzie was later posted to the RAF, where he gave 4 years of dedicated service to his country. In April 2024, he hung up his harness and has taken to this retirement lark like a duck to water. One of the lucky ones, Ozzie stayed right where he belongs… with his most favourite human, his handler, his guardian, his family. Now living his days in peace, comfort, and happiness, surrounded by his amazing family… including his doggo brother 🐕 Earlier this year, he celebrated his 7th birthday in proper civilian style, and now it’s onto many more celebrations ahead 🍾 Keep living your best life, Ozzie, with your pawsome hoomans. Here’s to many more happy, healthy years of love, adventure, and well-earned rest. 🫡♥️🎉 @royalairforcepolice @datr_official #RetiredNotDiscarded #HeroesWithPaws #lifeafterservice #germanshepherd #celebrations

Happiest 9th Birthday Cobra 🎂🐾🎉 RMWD Cobra, a proud Royal Air Force Police dog, spent much of her career alongside her handler at RAF Odiham before stepping into a well-earned retirement with her family. Hanging up her harness in December 2024, Cobra joined the Hero Paws family, where her service will always be recognised, respected, and remembered. Trained at the Defence Animal Training Regiment, Cobra gave six years of loyal, dedicated service to her country. Intelligent, driven, and operationally proven, she earned top marks by winning the RAF Odiham Operational Assessment and going on to compete in UK trials, a true testament to her capability. Her service placed her at moments of national importance, providing security during the repatriation of Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III, standing the line with quiet professionalism. Now, Cobra is living the life she earned. At home with her handler, her guardian, enjoying comfort, calm, and the simple joys of being just a dog. Alongside her little brother Leo, who keeps life fun and full of play. Affectionate, loyal, and with just the right amount of sass, Cobra loves her cuddles… and makes sure you know if you stop too soon. Today, we celebrate not just a birthday — but a life of service, loyalty, and everything that comes after. Happy 9th Birthday, Cobra 🐾 Here’s to many more years of love, comfort, and well-earned adventures. Retired does not mean discarded. Support doesn’t end when service does. Happy Retirement British Military High Assurance Search Dog BONNIE Bonnie hasn’t just served she’s had a phenomenal career. One of the original British Military Trainer High Assurance Search Dogs, she stood at the very forefront of capability, helping shape the standard for those that followed. Deployed to Mali as part of the UK’s UN peacekeeping mission, Bonnie became the first British military search dog deployed to Mali, operating in high-threat environments alongside EOD teams, where precision, trust, and reliability weren’t optional… they were everything. But her story doesn’t stop there. Bonnie was part of the next generation of military working dogs, contributing to the evolution of specialist MOD equipment designed to protect and enhance operational capability. She was among those trialling: • Protective boots • Tactical vests • Eye protection • Hearing protection Part of a £3.1 million MOD investment into the future welfare, safety, and effectiveness of over 500 military working dogs. That tells you everything you need to know. She wasn’t just in the system she helped define it. 🐾 Deployed operationally 🐾 Trusted in high-risk environments 🐾 Contributed to the future of working dog capability But behind all of that… Was the bond. The partnership. The trust. And now, that bond brings her full circle. Bonnie has gone on to live with one of her original handlers, a place where she is known, understood, and exactly where she belongs. While her current guardian will miss her desperately, there’s pride in knowing she finally gets to hang up her harness and step into the retirement she has more than earned. 🐾 From operational ground 🐾 To the life she now deserves Service complete. Loyalty eternal. @1_mwd @bfbsradio @forcesnews @bfbscreative #RetiredNotDiscarded #malinios #HeroesWithPaws #lifeafterservice #militaryworkingdog
