Nixon protected it. Carter protected it. Trump just erased both quietly on a Friday afternoon.
A grizzly bear will abandon its habitat when there's just one mile of road per square mile. One mile. Now there's no limit on where these vehicles can go.
In the Mojave, desert tortoises have already lost 96% of their population in some monitored areas - partly because off-road vehicles crush their burrows. A federal judge just ordered 2,200 miles of trails closed to protect what's left.
Then Trump signed this.
No designated trails. No boundaries. No framework at all. When vehicles go off trail they shatter habitat into pieces too small for wildlife to survive in. They destroy stream banks. They push predators toward humans. And when that happens, the animals always lose.
There was no vote. No public comment. Just a signature.
Now the agencies tasked with writing replacement rules are the BLM, the Forest Service, and the National Park Service - all under an administration that has spent months dismantling every protection they had.
The Interior Department, led by Doug Burgum, is in charge of most of it. The same Doug Burgum who has opened public lands to drilling, mining, and grazing at every turn.
Don't hold your breath.

Channel 12 has released the MOU between the US and Iran
1. Iran, the US and their allies will cease hostilities, including in Lebanon
2. Iran reiterates its commitment not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons
3. US and Iran pledge to resolve issue of disposal of enriched uranium stockpile
4. US and Iran to discuss enrichment issue and Iran's nuclear needs
5. Iran will maintain status quo on its nuclear program as long as negotiations continue
6. The US will lift the naval blockade, not impose new sanctions, and will not increase forces in the region during the negotiations.
7. Iran will make the necessary arrangements to ensure safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, free of charge, for 60 days.
8. US pledges to make frozen Iranian assets available for use with implementation of MoU
9. If a final agreement is reached, the US will withdraw its forces within 30 days and lift all sanctions on Iran.
10. Any final agreement will include a plan to establish a $300 billion fund for Iran's reconstruction.
11. US to give Iran temporary sanctions waivers to sell oil during negotiations
12. Negotiations will be held between Iran and Oman with the participation of Gulf policy to define "arrangements regarding shipping and maritime services"

🇺🇸🇮🇷 The agreement includes a $300 billion private investment fund. Reuters reports more than half is already pledged, backed by private companies from the US, Gulf states, Asia, South America and Africa.
This reframes the entire deal. A government commitment to reconstruct Iran was always going to be politically impossible to sell in Washington.
A private investment fund with $150 billion already committed before the ink is dry is a different animal entirely.
That's a coalition of global capital that has decided Iran's economic reopening is worth betting on, and it creates a constituency for the deal's success that goes well beyond any government's political will.
The fund is also a pressure mechanism. If the final agreement collapses, $150 billion in committed private capital loses its entry point into one of the most resource-rich and underleveraged economies on earth.
Not a diplomatic incentive. That's a financial one.
And financial incentives tend to be more durable than political ones.
