PRIDE Month IS Detroit.
We are celebrating local Queer Pioneers, Allies, and Active Organizers in food equality, expression & empowerment. And we are honored to uplift Detroit’s very own Liberation and Space Maker, the icon, Ruth Ellis.
While most people stayed in the closet, Ruth Ellis — born in 1899 — forged a path for people and safe space in Detroit’s Queer community, especially caring for African American youth and Elders, with the claim of being the oldest open lesbian until her death at age 101. A woman, artist, activist and Detroiter who made real change by living authentically and with compassion and care for community.
Maintaining an out relationship with her partener in 1920, Miss Ellis' home became a haven for African Americans who came ‘out’ decades before the Civil Rights Movement and Stonewall.
There is no pride without liberation. Today and always we honor Miss Ruth Ellis and her living legacy.
We are calling on you to join us for the 2025 Neighborhood Summit Saturday, June 28, 2025. We are building power and strategizing how to carry Miss Ruth Ellis’ torch. JOIN US!
