Congratulations, you just scrolled past 47 tweets without stopping
Yeah, I counted
Well, not literally, but that's what we all do on X, isn't it? Scroll, scroll, scroll... until something hits different
So I got curious to what actually makes us stop?
Started studying viral articles & the ones that couldn't go viral even though articles are a cheat code rn, examining what made me personally slam the brakes on my timeline, and honestly there are only four things that kill a great tweet before it even has a chance
so here are what i found...
- 1. You're burying the headline
People decide whether to engage in 0.8 seconds
Your first seven words either stop the scroll or they don't
Look at these two openings:
-I just discovered something crazy about growing on X...
-This one technique got me 10K followers in 30 days
The second one yeah? Just instant clarity
- 2. You're talking like a academic paper
Confusion is the silent killer for any reader, the moment someone has to re-read your tweet to understand it, they're already gone & moved on to the next dopamine hit
- 3. You're making it all about you
The fastest way to make someone care is to make it about them
Replace "I" with "you" and watch what happens...
If you're stuck at 500 followers...
You're making this mistake with your replies...
vs
Your tweets aren't failing because of the algorithm...
Now I'm leaning in because you're talking to me, not at me
- 4. There's no tension
This is the big one & almost everyone misses
You can nail the first three mistakes, but if there's no curiosity gap, I am sorry
For exampole... what made you keep reading this longfrom? obviously because it was the promise of something you don't know yet
A gap between where you are nd where you could be
But please note that at the end of the day, great tweets are not a matter of going viral or whatnot but try as much as possible to make someone stop, think, and feel like you just read their mind.
