🇳🇴 QUERY: EVAS vs. EVAR: Long-Term Showdown? 💥
A 9-Year Follow-up Study from Norway
The Nellix Endovascular Aneurysm Sealing (EVAS) system showed promising early results. But how did it hold up over the long haul compared to standard Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR)?
This single-centre study from Norway analysed 281 elective AAA patients with a median follow-up of 9.3 years! 👇
💡KEY FINDINGS from the Long-Term Cohort Comparison:
The comparison of EVAS (n=117) vs. EVAR (n=164) reveals a clear picture regarding device durability and success/failure in critical areas:
• Mortality: All-cause long-term mortality was comparable between the two groups.
• The Critical News: EVAS was associated with statistically significantly higher rates of:
• Graft Failure - Freedom from device failure at 5 years was 54% for EVAS vs. 98% for EVAR.
• Aneurysm Growth - Sac growth ≥5 mm was recorded in 47% of EVAS cases vs. 17% of EVAR cases.
• Re-intervention - Open Surgical Conversion (OSC) was required in 31% of EVAS patients vs. 2% of EVAR patients.
• Aneurysm-Related Death - significantly higher after EVAS (12% vs 0.6%).
👉 TAKEAWAY: Durability is King
While EVAS delivered short-term benefits (shorter hospital stay, less Type II endoleak), the study found its long-term durability was substantially worse, leading to high rates of re-intervention, sac growth, and aneurysm-related death. This study underscores the crucial need for close long-term monitoring of all new prosthetic devices.

ALT • We used von Bertalanffy growth curve to enable age prediction of harbour porpoises. • Harbour porpoises grow 66% during the first year. • Asymptotic length was reached after 4 years. • Large seasonal variations in body mass, girth and blubber thickness were evident. • It is possible to predict individual body mass ± 2 kg using length and girth. • Enables investigations of nutritional state by measurements of the Body Mass Index.
