For years, farmers in western Madhya Pradesh watched helplessly as blackbucks and nilgais wandered into their fields and wiped out standing crops.
Harvests kept shrinking, and so did hope.
Last month, India saw its first helicopter-supported Boma relocation drive.
MP’s forest department, working with conservation experts from South Africa, began gently herding these animals away from farms and into protected habitats like Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.
A long V-shaped funnel made of natural-looking barriers is set up, and teams on the ground, guided by a helicopter, slowly move the herd through the narrowing path until they enter an opaque, calming chute.
From there, they’re taken in vehicles to safer forest zones. On the first day, 45 blackbucks were moved.
Today, more than 500 blackbucks and 59 nilgais have already been relocated to sanctuaries where they can live freely without entering farmlands.
