Their phones were taken for legitimate safeguarding purposes, including attempting to verify identities and checking for extremist content or organised‑crime involvement. That is standard practice in many countries. Meanwhile, the British taxpayer is already covering every aspect of life for people who here arrive illegally: accommodation, food, clothing, healthcare, legal support, entertainment, travel. And now we’re expected to pay compensation on top of everything else? It’s indefensible. We must question a government that seems determined to throw taxpayer money around like confetti while ignoring British people who have fallen on hard times. We have veterans - men and women who served in uniform, who risked their lives for this country - sleeping on rough on the streets. Some die on the streets.
