We’ve started on a year long #MakeWriting inquiry with grd 4&5. Ss are on their journeys in understanding that to communicate ideas, stories, feelings-we don’t always have to privilege print. We used loose parts here to communicate stories of “happy”@ThornwoodPS @AngelaStockman
Writing workshops are powerful! These grade 4 Ss were 💯 focused & engaged as they built stories using Lego developing the setting, characters, beginning, middle & end. Sticky notes provided Ss opp’s to begin the writing process with confidence. #MakeWriting @AngelaStockman
Our #makewriting journey continues. As we continue to think deeply about our #narratives, and develop our story elements, bit by bit, some students choose #stopmotion to add detail, complexity and FUN. I sense a film festival coming soon…@ThornwoodPS
As part of our #makewriting process, we honoured our writers&creators by giving time & space for peer2peer feedback. Did our #narratives make sense, flow. Was the problem & solution clear. Was the story interesting? So much goodness happened here🎉 @ThornwoodPS @AngelaStockman
Then this student took these ideas, and turned it into an amazing #stopmotion animated short movie! If you could see the smiles 👏
Student: “can I show my story to my class?”
Me: “you can show it to the world”

When we believe they can - they believe they can! This grd5 never wrote a story before. Then he was provided opportunities to “make”. “It’s about not being able to pay rent. They have to sell the TV. Then they make a cardboard one & have fun acting & playing”. #makewriting
Grd4 Ss exploring #looseparts & structures of #narratives to create characters, setting, problem, solution…bit by bit. So much goodness has happened in this process, greatest of which is empowering Ss to think deeply, & create joyously #makewriting@ThornwoodPS @AngelaStockman
As grade 4/5 Ss continue to explore #multimodal communication using #looseparts, they really connected with the emotion of anger. So…we built “angry”. Ss representations & what they communicated with their builds was 🔥. #makewriting @AngelaStockman @ThornwoodPS
Grade 5 Ss using loose parts to represent and communicate ideas. Our inspiration was the book LOVELY by Jess Hong. Ss communicated their own ideas of “lovely”. Communication IS multimodal!! #makewriting#looseparts@ThornwoodPS @AngelaStockman
Big round of applause for this episode! Everyone needs to listen to this but more than that - do this work. It will transform you! I’m currently deeply engaged in this work with grade 4&5 Ss and it has been a journey of joy❤️ #makewriting - like NOW friends!
“Stories always lead people somewhere.” -The Barren Grounds by @DaveAlexRoberts. As we complete our read aloud connected to Science and Social Studies, we live those words and begin preparing for Master Storyteller 3. Let’s see where it takes us. #BOBs#makewriting#mentortext
Helping #MLLs bring their home lives into the classeoom through sharing weekend news. Honing our writing skills by exercising practices for adding detail using #Makewriting, success criteria and checklists. Ss will track their growth by looking back at their self-assessments.
#Grade4 started their #makewriting journey with this “fire starter” inspired by @AngelaStockman. With little experiences in using #looseparts to communicate, we began with the text “LOVELY” & represented our own version of what we imagined “lovely” is to each of us. Press play⬇️
