Aadhaar is not legally mandatory for children to live or to access basic rights in India, such as education, health services, or schooling.

The Supreme Court ruled that Aadhaar is optional for most school admissions and essential services for children, especially those aged 6–14, as per the Right to Education Act.
Other valid identity documents can be used for schools or public services if an Aadhaar card is not available.
Children under 5 are enrolled without biometrics, using a parent's Aadhaar.
A minor is generally defined as a person under the age of 18, as they have not yet reached the legal age of majority.
Mandatory update: The UIDAI urges parents to update biometrics (MBU) for children when they reach 5 years old, ideally by age 7, to keep the Aadhaar card active.
If a child was enrolled before age 5, they must update fingerprints, iris, and facial photos between ages 5 and 7 to prevent deactivation.
Why then is a Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) required at age 5, and again at 15?
