Mercedes ditched the actuator pod entirely for their hedgehog rear wing and full winglets, the most aggressive layout on the grid. With active aero banned, this setup targets the low-speed compression zones in sector two where downforce must hold without any straight-mode adjustment. Most teams kept conservative flaps; Merc went all-in on the geometry the regs were built to punish.
Antonelli himself flagged that wet conditions in Canada masked the package differences. The new FIA compression ratio check at 130°C, debuting this weekend, now adds scrutiny on whether Merc's engine edge survives the same static-wing constraint.
Norris and McLaren arrive with their own cooling tweaks, but their quali strength sits in precise entry speed rather than raw load. If Merc's wing generates the expected grip without overheating the rears on the climb to Casino, the 131-88 margin stops being a narrative and starts becoming structural.
