She clutched a small metal case — six remaining vials, the last proof that her vaccine worked.
Beside her, soldiers shouted orders, drones screeched overhead, and the roar of the infected echoed from the hills.
A sergeant grabbed her arm.
“Ma’am, we have to move — NOW!”
Jade hesitated for a heartbeat. Her gaze turned back toward the inferno — where, only hours ago, Jake had given his life for her discovery.
His last words still echoed in her mind.
She whispered, trembling:
“I have to survive. The vaccine has to survive. Whatever it takes.”
As she climbed into the armored Humvee, explosions lit the skyline behind her.
Jets screamed above. Tanks opened fire on the endless red-eyed horde flooding the highway.

The shaman grabbed Valeria’s arm.
“Run north! Now! We will hold them as long as we can.”
She shook her head, tears streaming.
“But… what about my brother?”
He hesitated.
Then from behind her came a faint sound — the creak of the bamboo cage.
Her brother raised his trembling hand.
His eyes, calm now, met hers.
“Run, querida hermana… run as far and as fast as you can. Take the cure. Save those who still have hope.”
Valeria’s lips quivered.
She wanted to speak, but no words came.
The shaman pushed her toward the jungle path.

The Brother in the Cage
The jungle was silent except for the hum of generators and the soft chanting of the tribe.
Valeria held a syringe filled with the shimmering green serum.
They had captured several infected and placed them in bamboo cages.
She walked slowly toward the first one — until she froze.
Her breath stopped.
Inside the cage, gripping the bamboo with trembling hands, was a man with torn clothes, bloodshot eyes, and a cracked voice.
Even through the dirt and decay, she recognized him.
“…Hermanito?” she whispered.
Her little brother.
He stared at her, breathing hard, half human, half lost.
She swallowed her fear, tears rising.
“I will help you,” she said, voice trembling, raising the syringe. “Te lo prometo.”
The medicine slid into his arm.
For a moment, he just stared, confused, trembling.
Valeria turned away, clutching her pendant, whispering to herself:
“How… how did he walk all the way from Peru to here? The infection is moving like a flood. Faster than we can imagine.”
She looked up at the sky, red mist rising over the jungle canopy.
Her eyes hardened.
“We have to stop it. Or everything is lost.”
