EL SHADDAI — The All-Sufficient God
One of the most powerful names of God in the Bible is El Shaddai, which means “God Almighty” or “The All-Sufficient One.” This name reveals a God who is more than enough for every need, every battle, and every promise in our lives.
The name El Shaddai first appears when God revealed Himself to Abraham at a time when the promise of a son seemed humanly impossible. Abraham was old, his wife Sarah was barren, and hope seemed gone. Yet God declared:
“I am God Almighty (El Shaddai); walk before Me faithfully and be blameless.”
— Genesis 17:1
In that moment, God was saying: “Abraham, what is impossible for man is possible for Me. I am the Almighty. I am enough.”
Throughout Scripture, El Shaddai reminds us that God is not limited by human weakness, circumstances, or time. When we are weak, He is strong. When our resources run out, His provision begins.
The patriarch Jacob also spoke of God as El Shaddai when blessing his sons:
“May God Almighty (El Shaddai) bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers.”
— Genesis 28:3
Later, God reminded Moses that He had revealed Himself to the patriarchs as El Shaddai:
“I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty (El Shaddai).”
— Exodus 6:3
This name shows us three powerful truths:
1. God is All-Powerful
Nothing is too hard for El Shaddai. He created the universe and holds all things together.
2. God is All-Sufficient
He is enough for every need—spiritual, emotional, and physical.
3. God is the Keeper of His Promises
Even when circumstances say “impossible,” El Shaddai says, “I will fulfill what I have spoken.”
Whatever you are facing today—fear, uncertainty, lack, or broken dreams—remember this: our God is El Shaddai. He is more than enough.
Trust Him. Walk with Him. Believe His promises.
El Shaddai is still the Almighty God today.
