Tufts University researchers just showed that you do not need brute force to make AI smart. Matthias Scheutz and his team built a neuro symbolic AI system that uses 100 times less energy than standard approaches while nearly tripling accuracy on robotic planning tasks. The paper is on arXiv from February 22nd and will be presented at ICRA 2026 in Vienna. Their system trained in 34 minutes. Standard vision language action models take over 36 hours for the same task. On the Tower of Hanoi puzzle, it hit 95% accuracy. The conventional VLA approach managed just 34%. On unseen puzzle variants it had never encountered, the system still succeeded 78% of the time, while standard models essentially could not generalize at all according to the researchers. The trick is combining neural networks with old school symbolic reasoning. Instead of throwing massive compute at pattern matching, the system breaks problems into logical steps, using rules and abstract concepts like shape and balance. It mirrors how humans actually solve problems rather than learning everything from raw data. AI currently consumes over 10% of all US electricity, roughly 415 terawatt hours in 2024, and demand is projected to double by 2030. Everyone is scrambling to build more data centers and power plants. This paper suggests the answer might not be more power. It might be a fundamentally different architecture. Training cost down to 1%. Operational energy down to 5%. Accuracy nearly tripled. That is not an incremental improvement. That is a paradigm shift in how we think about the relationship between compute and intelligence. Treasure or not? the batching numbers assume batch size 1 right? in prod you batch across users and those latency numbers fall apart fast. kv cache reuse helps but interactive use cases still suffer
