PETER OBI's TOP 10 ACHIEVEMENTS AS GOVERNOR OF ANAMBRA STATE, 2006 to 2014
1. FISCAL PRUDENCE AND SAVINGS
Anambra became the first state in Sub-Saharan Africa to start Sub-Sovereign Wealth Savings. Obi left office with about 150 to 500 million dollars saved across currencies and investments, no major debts, and projects completed without borrowing or bonds. The Debt Management Office rated Anambra as Nigeria’s least indebted state, and the Senate called it the most financially stable.
2. EDUCATION TRANSFORMATION
He returned schools to missionary owners while keeping state funding, which led to major improvements.
Anambra moved from around 25th to 1st in WAEC and NECO rankings by the end of his tenure. He also provided over 30,000 computers through Microsoft partnerships, ICT centers, buses, boreholes, and new classrooms across communities.
3. ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE
Obi constructed and rehabilitated over 800 to 900 kilometers of roads in a state of about 4,844 square kilometers, plus 28 bridges.
This earned Anambra recognition for having one of Nigeria’s best road networks, especially for rural connectivity, according to the Federal Ministry of Works.
4. HEALTHCARE PARTNERSHIPS AND IMPROVEMENTS
He partnered with churches to upgrade hospitals like Iyienu, Our Lady of Lourdes, and St. Charles Borromeo. He built the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, the first state-owned teaching hospital, and the Joseph Nwilo Heart Centre.
Anambra won awards from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for immunization and polio efforts, and many health institutions gained accreditation.
5. SECURITY AND PEACE RESTORATION
He equipped police with vehicles, fuel, allowances, and weapons, and supported community security efforts. This helped restore relative peace, with reports of no violent crime incidents in the last five years of his tenure, which created a better environment for investment.
6. ATTRACTING INVESTMENTS AND INDUSTRY
Obi attracted major projects like the SABMiller brewery in Onitsha, worth about 100 million dollars and currently the highest tax paying entity in the State, and supported Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, Nigeria’s first indigenous auto plant. He also promoted agriculture, poultry, and other industries, which boosted private sector job growth.
7. INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
He built the first state Secretariat Complex, Jerome Udorji, and new structures for the state university.
His administration conducted aerial mapping and structure plans for Awka, Onitsha, and Nnewi. He also attracted World Bank support for erosion control through the NEWMAP program.
8. POVERTY ALLEVIATION AND PLANNING
Anambra conducted Nigeria’s first state-level Poverty Mapping with DFID support to guide interventions. Governance was aligned with Millennium Development Goals, earning national recognition as a top performer.
Anambra’s Human Development Index ranking improved from about 8th to 3rd among states by the end of his tenure.
9. CLEARING ARREARS AND STABILITY
He paid off long-standing pension and gratuity arrears dating back to the military era, and left no salary arrears or contractor debts at handover. He also provided security vehicles to all 177 communities in the state.
10. OVERALL GOVERNANCE AND AWARDS
Obi emphasized order, civility, and transparency in governance. He received awards including MDG and UNDP best performer, and ThisDay Most Prudent Governor, among others for education and health.
He left a foundation for continued progress and improved investor confidence.
